After having my new dump trailer stolen this summer I decided to come up with a non removable lock. The dump trailer that was stolen had a 1 inch diameter braided cable lock around both wheels on one side, they just hooked up and drove away until the locking part broke. Removing the coupler helps somewhat but thieves bring their own nowadays.
The piece of metal with the padlock was added to the trailer and when the other piece is installed it can't be removed without removing this padlock which is unreachable except with the key.
The top piece of metal hooks over the top of the hitch and the slot at the bottom goes over the piece of metal in the first picture.
Push the pin through and lock, this gives the impression that the lock is held on with the pin, however the pin is only there to hold down while locking the padlock shown in pic 1. The hole in the very top is to look through while installing the interior padlock.
Nice idea. It's pretty crappy that we have to go to such lengths.
Trailer theft has become extremely bad in Alberta at the mo. While looking for a replacement dump trailer my wife and I were at a dealer checking GVWR of different trailers on the lot. Someone came out to see what we were doing and they told us that thieves are going to dealers and getting VIN numbers off trailers to use on the ones they steal.
