Towing Question for New Member regarding Mega Cab 2500 4X4 5.9
You don't need a sliding hitch on the MegaCab. You need the 5th Wheel to have one of the pin boxes that extend forward about 10 inches, and it works perfect. My Hithchhiker came with it, and I can turn as short as I could with a long bed. Also, my 3500 4x4 rides great. With a 2500, you would need some air bags, helper springs, extra leaf spring, or something to keep it from squatting down so bad. With the 3500, you can get by without it.
THAT THING IS HUGE!! your truck looks like a lil tiny mushroom truck , like a new toyota or something in front of that!!! great testament to these trucks right there!!
I just got back from a 5 day trip with our new 3500 Mega Cab and 39' Toyhauler.
This thing is awesome,
the truck pulls this trailer as good as my last 23' tow trailer. It's like the truck steps up a notch as you add weight.
The superglide is the only hitch to get if your 5th wheel cap is anything close to size as mine. It's like magic as it moves back and keeps a safe zone for the truck cab. I'm way to lazy to even think of getting out and using a manual slider.
I took some smack from a few guys on other forums for pulling this trailer with a SRW rig. My pin weight is rite about 2900lbs. Well they don't own it and they don't drive it, I do. This truck is very capable, if your looking at a new Dodge get the 3500 in a SRW or Dually, what ever suites your taste, But do go to a 3500 model. It's worth the little bit extra.
This combo is 22,480lbs the trailer is about 15K of that total.

Its true. if YOU feel good. Not um inflated head good but you really feel comfy then get what you want. Im fairly possitive that the 3500 and 2500 is the same expect overload spring. What i mean is axles, brakes, that sorta thing. Big thing i would worry about is the whole stopping ordeal. Ive pulled trailers i probably shouldnt have. like 28-30k approx. HUGE none the less and stopping was always my issue. i would always coast to a stop becaues i didnt want to depend on the brakes to stand up to the task. So i would get the pac brake if you get the 5.9 L helps GREAT. Then go off and have happy camping. You WILL need some sort of slider if you get a 102 wide hauler. my neighbor down the street just got a ford crew with a short box ( why i dunno) and 3rd day he owned it ran his trailer into the back of his cab.
As above the towing rating is different from the GVWR. The 3500 & 2500 are rated at 20K. The other rating is as above 9000# for the 2500 and 9900# for the 3500. From all I've been able to find out about the 2 trucks is that the only major difference is that the 3500 has 1 additional overload in the rear spring packs. That gives you an additional 900 lbs of truck carrying capacity. Think ride and all other factors are the same. Both have E rated tires, both have the 48RE tranny and the list goes on.
My combination is a 2500 4x4 short box towing a Cedar Creek 33' fiver. Truck weighs in with trailer attached at 9450 and whole package is 19760#. I am under on axle ratings, total weight but slightly over (450#) on truck capacity. Tows well even thru the mountains, Never had a problem.
