Towing MPG with 48RE?

Towing a boat about 3500lbs or my trailer 4500lbs I get 11.8.
it seems if you put anything on it I get 11-12 MPG is this normal?

Re:MPG with 48RE?

That seems low to me. I've got a 6 speed and get a little better than that pulling about 9k. Pulling the boat, the overhead readout typically reads between 12-13. Hand calculations for fuel mileage always figured to be about 1.5 mpg better than the overhead readout.

How many miles on the truck? Maybe just give her some time to break-in some more.

How fast do you drive? Speed is probably the biggest variable in towing mileage.

I get 12 dragging a 7K TT, but I'd do better if I slowed down a little.

Also, how many miles do you have? CTDs frequently do better after they get a few miles under their serpentine belt. ;D

Re:Towing MPG with 48RE?

I just got back from a trip from southern Oklahoma to Colorado and back towing my 22' Hi-Lo ( about 4500 lbs.).

Drove 2773 miles and used 192.3 gallons of gas for a total of 14.4 MPG. I usually drove the speed limit - normally 65 to 70 MPH ( speed limit over Wolf Creek Pass was 45). I crossed Wolf Creek Pass, La Veta Pass, Raton Pass and Cumbres pass.

The truck had 2805 miles on the odometer at the start and 5578 at the end. There was a dramatic increase in gas mileage about half way through the trip. The first two fill ups I averaged 13.3 MPG each and the last 2 were 15.3 and 14.7. Of course the low profile of the Hi-Lo trailer helped get better mileage than you would get with a high profile trailer of the same weight.

The truck pulled great and the 48re worked good. It started easily one morning when the temp was 21 degrees. Of course this light load was no match for the big Cummins. Guess I will have to get a bigger trailer to really test it!

14-15 at 70-75 pulling #6000 Artic Fox trailer. Should have more wind resistance that boat so I think you are low unless you are going 80

I have a 48RE

I'd say you are about normal. I get 13-15 empty and 9-12 loaded.

Re:Towing MPG with 48RE?

We are towing around 18,K aand have seen anywhere's from 11 mpg to 9 mpg. We drive conseratively most of the time...about 65 mph on cruise and in overdrive with the air on. When we're not hooked up we get about 18 mpg w/air and as much as 21 mpg wo/air, according to the on-board computer that is.

Re:Towing MPG with 48RE?

120 mile round trip towing a 2 horse trailer (lots of wind resistance), weight approximately 6,500 lbs, speed about 110km/h (65 - 70 mp/h), overhead computer indicated 12.5 mpg. Truck only has 1,800 km (1,100 miles) on it.
