NV5600 Problems?

I've been reading a lot about how hard it is to find parts for the NV5600 6 speed. So is there common problems with these transmissions? What normally goes wrong? What parts are the hard ones to find? Is there a common fail with these? How many of you had problems? How many of you haven't? Thanks!

My truck was used and the rev. synchro soon went after I bought it. DC overhauled it in warranty and all is well. The tech said the rev. synchro is not what the others are and won't take any abuse. I think the first owner hit R instead of 5 too many times. The NV5600 is heavy and stiffer and a little slower shifting than my 5spd was. That's the only drawbacks I know of. I think my 6spd is a lot happier towing in OD for a long, hard day than the 5spd was. Craig

No problems with mine except I have grazed reverse without trying a few times. What a bad noise that is.

At 170,000 miles My 3rd gear was missing a tooth. Don't know why.
Put $3500 into it for a rebuild. No one wanted to touch it and the place that did, quoted me 2500 to do the work. As soon as he called to order a kit, he called me to tell me it would be more and asked what to do.

I think most people on here have few problems. Some run an extra quart of lube. You can nick reverese when going for 5th. These trannies are considered good for heavy towing, much heavier than the 5 speed.

I've got 146K on my 5600 with no problems, tow a 10,400 lb. 5'er, not all the time though. I run an extra quart in the 5600 too. Sometimes it seems like you need to use your foot to get it into reverse or 1st, other times it shifts like butter. Warm is better than cold for that. I had to have my NV4500 in my 2000 Ram rebuilt at 135K.

So it's just kind of hit and miss, and there really aren't any common problems, just the normal freak things that can happen. That and it's harder to find parts for them...

i have heard of few output shafts breaking but not many i know that the 5600 is a better trans as far as strength goes than a 4500 but doesnt shift as smooth as the 4500. but i havent had anything happen to mine yet. i have a 117000 hard shifting miles on it.

215K on mine and just finished a 3500 mile trip with a GCW of 27,750 lbs. Still shifts great. It's all in how well you car for it. Change the oil when it should be and drive it like you own it, not like you stole it. It'll last forever.

Replaced the clutch in February 08. After replacement, there was a noise comming from the bell housing, that everyone said was the main imput shaft bearing. I said BS.

The shop sent the tranny over good tranny shop and torn it down trying to prove it was bad. Nothing found bad at 185,000 miles. Had just a little discoloration on the race of sixth gear. Replaced the gear, put new bearing and brass back in. Had some wear on the 3rd gear syncro.

Changed the clutch out again, everything was fine. Shifts a little hard still. Almost like the pilot bearing is hanging up or the hydraulic cyclinder is not pushing all the way in.

Anyway, the NV5600 is a good tranny. Search Google NV5600. All parts and dealers will come up.

Nothing but ongoing problems with mine. And it seems no one knows exactly how to biuld one correctly first or second time around either. In all fairness, based on the quality of the 4500 I just stuck in the '93, I MIGHT try Blumenthals for my next 5600. They are the North American rebuild center for D/C. They have then coming outta their ears back there!

The guys that did mine, knew what they were doing and had a parts source for the tranny. (NV5600) You may want to touch base with them.

Ask for Chris. If he is not there his daughter will answer the phone most likely. Info at the web link.

203,000 miles hauling commercially and I have no problem whatsoever. Replaced clutch 30k ago and still driving strong.

I do make a point not to tow in 6th below 1600rpm, a local shop is one of the major rebuilder of these transmissions and have many in stock, ZBAG.

For anyone that wants pictures of mine 5600 torn down to parade rest on the bench, PM or e-mail me and I will forward them via e-mail. I can't post them here as they are taken at 7megapixils. Can't reduce the size for posting. I did that so I could zoom in on some of the parts and really look at them.
