Need help with a heat issue

HI all, thursday I was towing my GN with jeep on it around 10k up some steep long hills 9% grade. My truck was running hot od was off and I could only get to 40 or so mph at the top of the hill( by now engine temp was at 240 and egt's almost 1400. as soon as I crested the top the temp's dropped almost immediatly to 190degrees. the comp was on but no wire tap. the converter is a brand new one dealer replaced last week. what can I do to keep it cooler when towing? as the trailer a 30'gn is new and I plan on using it often.

Thank's,
Marc

I replaced my fan clutch and cleaned the radiator where the blow by bottle spiills out when it isn't cleaned out. I just replaced my 190 thermostat with a 180 thermostat. I hope this helps me on the long climbs. I had no problem on the level.

Talking

I suspect that Water/Meth injection would help reduce temps. Aside from that, I would NOT run my egt as hot as you have. Automatics and A/C produce great quantities of heat. Slow down, turn off the A/C and enjoy the ride. Spend a minute less somewhere else. Why endanger your machine? You would laugh at how tiny the rad and fan is on my old first gen. Yet I only have troubles with heat when I run with a crosswind, towing the 5'er, and expect to do 70 mph in 5th gear. My temps gradually climb. Long hills are not much of a problem, I keep the rev's up and use changes in throttle to keep the pyro in line (post turbo - don't like for it to get above 1000 for a long time or 1100 for a short time.

With your automatic you want lots of rev's while climbing. Rely on torque at lower rpms and your egt will go sky high. As to the 180 degree thermostat, it probably won't help that much. You may run a little cooler on the flat but start to climb and any good thermostat will be wide open fast.

Here is a Rube Goldberg type fix, put a "t" on your windshield washer tank, add another pump and switch, place the end of a new line to dribble down onto your rad and or your tranny cooler. Evaporating water carries away a lot of heat. Washer fluid contains alcohol and it would be even better.

Drive loaded (the truck..... not you) up a hill with your windows open. Watch your temp climb and listen for the unreal roar when your thermostatic fan clutch engages. If it is slow to kick in or does not kick in at all you may have found the source of your problem. I was climbing a canyon with no A/C when I heard this godawful roar. Took a moment to figure out what was happening and I saw the temperature take a rapid dive.

It is also just possible that your thermostat is faulty.... it is not common but it does happen. It IS common for temps to cycle up and down quite a bit when the thermostat does open.
