My first big load...
Well, finally decided to haul off my brake rotor and drum pile this week. Had 240 rotors/drums, mostly rotors. had 5 engine blocks, 2 with cranks and pistons still inside, 3 without. Had one complete ford engine. Also had a bunch of crankshafts, cams, gears out of aluminum differentials, pinions etc. I guessed the weight of the rotors/drums, actually weighed several and estimated them at 2880lbs. Figured I had around 5200lbs with everything, heck the whole load just barely stuck up above the trailer fenders and I started the pile about two feet back from the front of the trailer so the majority of it was over the axles.
Towed down our steep gravel drive, had a butt pucker moment....did not adjust the trailer brakes, as I usually do and the trailer wanted to go straight when I wanted to turn....yeah, I knew it was heavy. Drove the 32 miles to the scrap joint, cautiously. Went across the scales, 16,200lbs!!!
I know that's light for some of you heavy haulers, but was a first for me. The whole load was 7660lbs. Yes, my trailer was slightly overloaded.....7000lb trailer and my estimate on my rotor weight was seemingly off
. Truck pulled it good and the trailer did well too. It was at 5am so no traffic to be worried about and any animals would have died a nasty death if they wandered into my path. Next time I'll haul the rotors at around 200 and keep my engine blocks and such for a different time. It's about every three months I'll have a good cast iron load, just have to watch my weight. If I can get a run like that every month I'll bump up to that 22' gooseneck I saw
Ok, I know...grossly overloaded, I figured by 2600lbs....if my trailer weighs 2000lbs. Tires were ok, I think they are all rate at 2100lbs or better, so thats 9400lbs...that don't justify my stupidity....have to watch my math better...

Yeah, I know.....
, but before my dodge it was a 95' Explorer with 5000lbs of rock grossing out at 11,000lbs or so. So 16,000lbs is a new thing.....you pick many daisies with your backhoe?
I knew I'd here from you heavy haulers!!
