Making a custom drop hitch
Making a custom drop hitch
I need to make about a 2ft drop hitch. I had made one a while ago when my buddies dad had a metal shop. Turned out real nice but it was just my design with a slight angle. Anyways what I need to know is about angles and such. Basically I need someone with experience to throw some input on my next design. I dont tow much , the occasional car or trailer.
Any input would be appreciated,
Thanks

look at my pulling hitch on the truck that i have... Granted its nothing much, its a four inch drop receiver that is reinforced to hold the yanking force that ive put on it. If you are gonna make a two foot reciever, no doubt it is going to have to be very very well reinforced, and possibly with 3/8 plaque or so to prevent it from swaying. Now what id do.. id try and get the angle as close as possible to an eight or ten inch drop recieiver, the same angle, just extend the middle of it down, and weld and reinforce it. I dont have much more input, but i will ask my dad, he does have more experience with this, and ill post back later. I have a drawing im making trying to "engineer" one, but ill post later with a legit answer, on edit to this post.. my mind went blank..

Rick, thanks for the intput. The hitch I made before was out of 1.25" steel. It was huge but I had the 200 ton press to bend it. The local metal shop has "hitch tube" just some square stock that I was thinking of using for the whole thing.

use solid, not tube for something like that.... you may want to design it like the pintle adapter plates found at TSC and Northern Tool.... That seems to be a good design and is adjustable...
