Honest fuel mileage with camp trailers/campers...
Re:Honest fuel mileage with camp trailers/campers...
12.5 ft high 5er with rounded end caps, 10.8K#, @ 60 mph, 2100 rpm, 13.1 mpg. Lots of 5-7% grades in the Golden State. With 30 mph headwind mileage drops to 12.0 mpg.

Be happy, TWZMYJP. If you were driving a v-8 gasser you'd be gettin bout 8.5-9.0 mpg and payin 20 cents a gal. more to boot.

Re:Honest fuel mileage with camp trailers/campers...
Phil, diesel fuel is cheaper than gasoline in granola land? Around these parts, this winter Diesel fuel has been running about the same price and more (sometimes WAY more) than mid-grade gasoline. Its only been in the last few weeks that the price has approached "regular".
Re:Honest fuel mileage with camp trailers/campers...
Running at 60-65mph with 27' aero style 5th 8000# 1600 miles 17mpg (14mpUSG) Empty 24-27 mpg (19-21 mpUSG) Towed mostly in OD except when tranny temp climbed above 200*F then dropped into direct at 55-60 mph. Didn't happen often.
Re:Honest fuel mileage with camp trailers/campers...
Sounds a little low but I drive at 60 with a 5 speed and with a 10.5 ft high camper weighing 2000 lb I get 16 +-. Speed is the biggest power robber, if you drove at a steady 55 you would probably get 15-16. Check your spedometer I just got a gps and found out my van was reading 5mph slow so I actually get 22 mpg instead of 20.
Re:Honest fuel mileage with camp trailers/campers...
I get 13-15 MPG pulling a 9000# tagalong ...with a good headwind it drops to 10-12 MPG I pulled 0ver 18,000 and got 10-12 ... no wind though ...
Re:Honest fuel mileage with camp trailers/campers...
Well, a big thanks to all those that replied. It seems to me that I'm still running a bit low, as my weight is a lot less than most, and my speeds are still conservative. But, I guess it's what I will have to live with and I certainly agree it drinks less fuel than my 1991 F-250 with the 460 V-8 did!! By the way, if you want to see the rig loaded up like I was talking about, check out my website over the next couple of days, as I will be uploading some pictures soon. http://www.geocities.com/tobyw2000

Re:Honest fuel mileage with camp trailers/campers...
Last weekend camping towing a two place open trailer with 2 quads and one quad in the box, about 150 LBS each for gear, 3 people running avarage 65 mph I got 13.2 mpg (Winter blend). Towing my 3-horse trailer and 10' camper (sits high basement model) loaded with horses and all the gear I get 10.5-14 MPG depending on head wind and speed but I usually average 70 MPH.
Re:Honest fuel mileage with camp trailers/campers...
Just pulled my camper up to the mountain property this weekend. Got just over 10 mpg which included a 18% 2 mile long hill fully loaded to about 8,000lbs. That included a bunch of lesser grade hills. Thanks to Deezila for the loan of towing equipment ;D

On the first trip, I averaged 12.4 mpg on two lane highways at speeds of no more than 70 mph. This was through southeastern Colorado to the panhandle of Oklahoma. The next two trips were northeast to the northcentral part of Nebraska in the sandhills on interstates the majority of the time. Both trips averaged 9.83 mpg when only counting the tanks of fuel that I was towing. Including about 80 miles of not towing the mileage jumped to about 11 mpg. On the second trip, my speed was 78 mph on the way there and 70 on the way back. The third trip I drove 74 each way.

After the second trip I could not figure out how my mileage dropped so much compared to the first trip. I'd raised my camper 2 inches before the second trip, though. Before the last trip I dropped the camper back down and the mileage was the same. The only thing I can figure is that there is a lot more wind in northeastern Colorado and Nebraska than in southeastern Colorado. At least, that's the way it was on my three trips. I'm very disappointed with the mileage but the truck still does it with plenty of spare power and I never notice the substantial headwinds at all. The Edge EZ gives me more power and had little effect on mileage when towing.

For comparison, with no load and before the EZ I was getting 17.5 mpg in mixed driving. With the EZ on level 2 I get 18.1 and on level 3 I get 18.7 mpg.

I did tow a 2000 lbs. popup camper from Denver to Craig whent he truck had 1500 miles on it. I averaged 17.5 mpg on I-70 through Eisenhower tunnel all the way to Craig.
