Headache Racks and towing a 5th wheel?
Headache Racks and towing a 5th wheel?
Hi Guys,
Anyone has a headache rack and also tows a 5th Wheel? I'd like to get a headache rack but i also do not want to prevent me from towing a 5th Wheel if I buy one in the coming years. Has anyone got both and tows without issues for clearances etc, any models thats better for clerances etc.
Regards,
Yan

Ive used a back rack on every single long box truck that I've towed a 5th wheel with and no problems but I didn't use one on my current 3500 SB because of clearance to the 5th wheel, however my son has a back rack on his 2013 ram 3500 4X4 SB, he pulls gooseneck trailers but no 5th wheels. I can tell you that your height clearance is reduced to the point that you will have to be careful at 7 feet if there is an incline of any kind you will hit unless you back up the incline.

Is the height clearance an issue because of the "ears" that you usualy find on headache racks or is it because the top bar on them? I'm not necessarily looking for a rack with the "ears" on it as its more to attach tools like shovels when needed etc and not really to put ladders on it so I don't need the side "ears" really so I was thinking I may be able to get a headache rack that is Just almost level with the roofline or maybe 1/2 inch or so above and that's it, that way I would not lose too much clearance. Oh, and I do have a Long box so that will help.
Anyone has pics of their headache rack they used when they towed, would love to see some pics.
It IS the ears that are the problem even though they are only about 2 inches it's enough to catch a 7 foot garage door if there is an incline involved but like I said backing UP the incline is ok only just though. Here is a pic of my sons truck with a goosneck on unfortunately the headache rack is not that visible. I think he might have "other" problems getting that through a 7 foot garage door though.
