Champion generator 4000W / C46540

This is for the folks on the other generator threads.

Just got the generator today model #C43540.

I ran the gen for about an hour running a water pump and then went to the trailer and turned everything I could on lights, frig, AC.

First thing I must say is it is nowhere near as quiet as the Honda EU3000. I had to point this out because some of the reviews I read about the Champion RV ready gen stated it was only a little louder. WRONG!!! not even close if anything it is a little quieter than a standard 4000W Troy Built gen I used.

That being said it had all the power I needed for the trailer. It ran well for the time I was using it. So far I still think it is worth the $300.00.

I will be using it this weekend on the camping trip at the state park (only when I need to ). Doing a few jobs in the next couple of weeks also and I'll add to this review later.

I just bought the same one but with wheels off e-bay for about the same price. A couple more still available.

We'll see how it does when it gets here.

RAF, was yours new or reconditioned?

I have this same generator, and yes you are right - it's nowhere near as quiet as the Honda's or the Yamaha's, but for $300 it's far better than any equally priced generator.

I about died when I saw what they are asking for the Hondas and Yamahas!!! $2000 and up!!

Now, if you camp in established areas where you need to be quiet, then you might want to spend the money, but for myself, the Campion works great.

Well went camping this past weekend. I ran the gen for about 3hrs with air on. The unit ran well but there was a problem that ocured twice. The air conditioner would cycle normally and the gen would raise rpms at that time. Twice though when the air would cycle the gen would just stumble. I turned the air off and back on and it ran fine.

I bought one last April from Kragen. I've known the manager for years... He had an extra wheel kit that he threw in for free. Otherwise, you have to order it from Champion.

I filled it with oil and gas and it started on the second pull. I ran it for a 30 minute break-in run with no load. A couple of weeks later, we did a four-wheeling trip to the desert that and the temps were right around 105*. I ran the generator and AC 12 hours a day for three days straight. When I shut it down to refuel, it restarted on the first pull every time.

Definitely not quiet like a Honda, but for $300 it's a heck of a good value. If you haven't already, go buy one.

You're right. Yours probably is the R46540 and mine is the R46535.

Mine doesn't have the RV plug but does have an additional 450 peak watts (3500W running/4450 peak). It just arrived this evening so we'll try it out tomorrow and see how it does.

You are right, they are not quiet, but you can quiet them down by making a box out of 4" Styrofoam and putting it over the top of it when it's running. You would be surprised how well that works.

Well, I haven't rewired mine for full 30A output yet (like th RV-ready model) but I can run my roof AC off the 20A duplex although not the AC and fridge. I'm going to look at the rewire this morning. Gen starts almost always on the first pull so no gripe there. Got 5.5 hours out of a full tank the other night running AC constantly so fuel consumption is not great but not horrible. Not quite 3 qts./hour under load. Overall, I'm happy with it for what I paid but it's just a stop-gap solution for me.

I called there customer service and talked to a real person They seem to think there might be something hanging up in the mechnical linkage. They gave me a repair shop to call if the problem comes back.

I haven't had a chance to get out camping again. Have used it for other things though. Ran a bunch of lights for about 5hrs one night, ran air compresser and power tools (circular saw, drill) another day. I didn,t have any problems.

HOw wold you guys rate the noise since that seems to be the issue everyoen is conocerned with..

Oh, and FWIW... NPS regs set teh standard for a generator in teh Nat. Parks at a Db rating of 62Db at 50 feet....they compare it to an average household vacum cleaner running.....

how would you rank teh Champion to that?( I know, very subjective question)
