It all depends on how the photo program you use operates but I can tell you how many of them do. When viewing the photo in your photo software, look at the top left and click on "image" then you can resize the photo by choosing the number of pixels to use.
Usually ti will show the size in a a set of 2 numbers something like 2568 x 1987 (just a random # I chose to demonstrate this) Change the largest number to 500 and the lower number will change accordingly if the box is checked to keep the same aspect of the photo.
Now the word "image" may instead be "Edit", you just have to look a little to figure it out. Good luck!
