Okay, I have a 1999 Ford Ranger. It obviously was from up north, because it has some pretty nice rust on the frame, and a little on the bed. There are one small inch or so hole in the frame, and the part that holds the gas tank up rusted and broke. Otherwise everything else is heavy-looking surface rust. Its not rusting anymore, but obviously it might could be considered weak.
What do you guys up north do? A frame swap? Or when you sale it, how much do you normally get out of it? Pennies? I need to get rid of the truck to help pay for some stuff. Otherwise I'd keep it....help!

I live about 100 miles South of Canada... don't know if you consider that up North or not.
Our stuff doesn't rust. A 99 Ranger that's rusty, dunno brutha. I'd take what ever someone is willing to offer.

wire brush and spray paint the surface rust you can get to.
hole in frame at critical part? just let the tire kickers know...
salt kills us up here but around 1500-2400 bucks for a good running , not body bad ranger. push the gas mileage thing....
prime the color parts you don't want to auto paint and say it is ready for paint!! NY can run the cars until they fall apart, PA has to stay the good side of 10 percent rust. We think it is cool to buy a PA car, the trucks will need shocks- dang cinder roads in PA...
no exhaust? brake lines rotted? rotors/cylinders seized? we get that sort of stuff all the time....
hopefully- it is low mileage.... parting it out can sometimes get more too....
and to think- we pay the highest taxes for this rust!
heidi in NY

Up here we run 'em until you can't pass inspection anymore, then we junk 'em or part 'em out. They are not worth the time, money or effort to repair.
If you're down south trying to sell a northern truck, good luck. Most of your potential customers will run for the hills after looking at it. You southern guys take rust for granted and junk perfectly good classic old vehicles because the tranny went out or sumthin'.
A month ago I went to Goergia for a rust free '79 Bronco. The guy sold it for $600 cuz he blew the rear. In as-is condition, I could flip it up here for $4000, but I'm keeping it to restore.

I don't see how you could have frame rust and not body rust . Have you checked the floorboards ? In MA they have annual inspections and check the frames . A rusted frame will not pass inspection.
One of the best things I did was move to southern Tn 14 years ago. The salt of Western NY would kill cars. Working on them was a pain in the backside. I have worked on cars and tractors down here that were 50 years old and you put a wrench on the bolt and pull and it pops loose. Up north your busting out the torch, spray lube, down on your knees with your bible in your hand...yankee cars and trucks good for one thing....the bone yard. That salt gets in there and it's there forever, you would have to acid dip the whole thing to get all the salt out of all the places it gets into.
We did like several on here said, drive em' til the body falls off and if it had a good motor/trans sell them and scrap the car. I had an uncle patch a 60's model jeep for the better part of 20 years. It was his winter vehicle and in the summer he would patch. He finally retired it to his plow vehicle and then one day the cab just let go and dropped down on the frame. He said there was nothing left to patch to. I believe he probably replaced the whole body over that 20+ years he owned it just by brazing in new metal, bondo and fixing every year!!
