Discount Tire Co. reneges on service policy

Just a heads-up for all concerned...

I bought six new wheels and tires from Discount Tire Company over two years ago and had them mounted, balanced and bought the extended service contract all at the same store...Since then, I've had them rotated, balanced and air pressure maintained by them at 6000 mile intervals just like I'm supposed to...This afternoon, I went to the same store for my regular service and was told because I have 19.5 inch tires on my truck they won't do any kind of service for me...

I pointed out that I bought and paid for the entire package at this same outlet and was told that they will not rotate, will not check air pressure and will not repair a flat for me under any circumstances...Their claim is that their "technicians" might get hurt because the tires are so big...

I then asked the assistant manager (highest ranking person present) if that meant that their service policy and guarantee they sold me was worthless and he said, "Yes, it is"...A rant would have done nothing for me as I might as well have been talking to a wall at that point so I told him that Discount Tire had lost any future business that they might ever have from me and left...

Discount Tire's website has no e-mail link on it but I will be writing them a very detailed letter for whatever good that will do...About all I can do at this point is warn my friends here about their practices and also post this on every other board on which I am a member...The Better Business Bureau and Chamber of Commerce will get copies also...

I wonder what their next step will be to protect their "technicians"...Maybe they will decide not to work on 16" or even 15" tires in the future...Maybe they'd like you to just slide an envelope of money under the door and go away and stop bothering them...Ben

The dealer I bought my dually from couldn't align it but would take it to a tire shop when I brought the truck in for service . Discount Tire should be banned from tires they cannot maintain to keep them in safe condition . Is this their e-mail link ? http://www.discounttiredirect.com/di...mpContact.jsp?

There is some discussion going on over on rv.net about the topic. They will refund the money you spent originally to get your tires serviced. As far as I am aware, they are not pro rating it. You need to go back to the location and talk with the store manager, not the assistant. It looks like for now they are not servicing the commercial sizes of 19.5 and 22.5.

This has come up before, apparently Discount Tire had an employee killed recently by a zipper rupture on a 19.5" tire. Rather than spend the money for proper tire cages and training to protect their employees, they chose to retreat from the 19.5" tire business. Heavy truck tire shops know all about zippers and their employees know better than to do anything but dismount and dispose of any tire that shows the warning signs. They also use tire cages when airing up tires off the vehicle.

They are talking as if these were split rims...I can't tell you how many 10.00X20's I've changed and I know they were dangerous to work with...That's why we used safety cages...

Discount Tire has over-reacted to a very unfortunate accident and will pay the price in lost business...If they were that concerned, they could buy a safety cage for every store and require employees to use it...So far, i've emailed Rickson and Michelin about their vendor...Ben

The best you can do is ask for a refund.

From a business standpoint adjusting your equipment and training to suit a very small percentage of the market is usually not worth the hassle.

Go in well informed and as politely as possible work with them until you got your money back.

I had this posted on a warranty issue forum but it applies to this as well...

We need to do a form letter that we could post somewhere on this site, Every time the dealer sticks to one of our fellow DTR members we could down load it and mail it to the dealer....
Spam them with a couple thousand letters might get their attention, the same applies to the Dodge Boys as well...

There is strength in numbers!
