How tough is it to make a waterpump that lasts?

If this keeps up, I will have a new truck by the time all these recalls are finished, now on with the Sirus/XM radios......

Bit me in the butt! Water pump shaft broke and shredded the serp belt. Left me stranded in a snow storm at the local ski hill 30 Miles from town. Wrecker didn’t arrive until 11pm. Only the 2nd time in 15 years of CTD ownership I needed a tow (other time was the lift pump in my 2003). In retrospect my batteries were having a hard time all week and I got a low coolant warning the other day. I’m guessing it was leaking out the shaft seal onto the belt and the belt was slipping on the alternator. Should have seen the signs. Dealership replaced pump (and belt) under warranty with the old design as the new ones aren’t out yet. So we’ll be doing this again.

By way of update, two months later and it's running great- no issues. Still no word from Ram about the new water pump design.

A bit of trivia:
I guess you guys knew you can still drive your truck without a serp belt? The tow truck above couldn't get to me because of the snow so I said "no problem, I'll drive it to you AND up your flatbed!" He was pretty shocked when it started and ran without a serp belt.

My 03 shredded it's serp belt and I left it running and drove to the shop. it's bummer being stranded... knock on wood 20 yrs of driving cummins and only been stranded once when the in tank fuel pump went out. Of course I had to hike up a mtn 1500' to get reception!

I called *********** on the water pump, still none in stock. So I guess I'll pray it doesn't go out.

Mine was replaced under Recall a few weeks ago.

Having a new water pump installed now that is the new one for the recall.

Nope, that is not the case at all. I have owned four (4) Dodge CTD Pickups since 1992 and still have my 1996 Dodge CTD 12 valve.

My post was to "return the favor" to DTR Member SOhappy for some "bashing"
he made towards my 2014 Super Duty in another thread. FWIW, DTR is open to
ALL brands of diesel trucks (Dodge, Ford and Chevy) although the majority of our members
are Dodge CTD owners of which I am included.
