Question High Idle help

Don't want to beat a dead horse, but someone (preferably a tech) tell me how to get the dealership to enable my high idle. The tech is a really nice guy but he told me it can't be done. What is the procedure on the star scan tool so I can take it to him and basically walk him through it. Thanks for the help it been pretty cold here lately(teens).

I must have gotten a good one because my dealership was able to do it and for free... Hopefully someone will be able to help you out. Seems really odd that the "experts" at the dealership don't know how and/or are giving you BS about it not being able to be done.

I would take it to another dealer if yours says it can't be done. A good service manager will be able to do it when you asked. Mine lokked at me funny and saig it cant be done on a manual, I told him to do it just like the auto and I will do the rest. He said ok we will try it and it worked out fine. It seems like eveyone else on here that asked there dealer to do it got it done right away and it is supposed to be free of charge!

i have written quite a bit about enabling a manual transmission high idle. while there is no extra cost involved with a manual, yours was a fluke if it worked without grounding the clutch switch wire on the firewall. the manual has to have this done in order for high idle to work (most dealers don't know this). one other thing, not sure where you read it is supposed to be free of charge, but that is not the case. while it is true that it is literally a 5 minute procedure with the star scan, a lot of dealers want to charge for it. i had quotes up to $135 to enable it. i wound up going to the dealer i bought it from (further away), and they did it for free. but in the end it is a service for them to enable it, and they can charge what thy want to do it.

I bought mine in Victoria,tx and learned about the High Idle afterwards. I was in Lafayette, LA and went to the local Dodge dealer there and he hooked me up in and out in 10 minutes. NO CHARGE I thought that the High Idle in the Manuals was used for the PTO function.

it is used for the PTO, and to elevate the idle temps to prevent wet stacking and carbon build up.

I did have to ground the wire, I got it from one of your previous posts. I was going to do it on the ecm by putting a pin in from Cummins and grounding as someone else had told me to do, but that wont work on the 6.7. Anyway I meant the dealer looked at me funny but went ahead and enabled it and when I got it home I grounded the wire and it worked. I thought that it was free of charge but I guess some dealers are out to make a buck and not more customers.

yeah, i was amazed that the dealers here in Austin that i contacted wanted to charge so much. the closest dealer to me actually quoted me 1.5 hours of work to do it, which equalled $135!!! i can see maybe a small charge if it was not your purchasing dealer, but i wasn't out to get raped. if someone knows about some of these things before the purchase, then the dealers will certainly do them for free to get the business. i guess they figure if you already bought it, you can pay or go elsewhere. i did the latter.

I had mine done at my local dealer after having bought the truck about 40 miles away an a different one. They did it for free and maybe it was because I had a list of about a half dozen other issues that needed to be addressed as well. Hate to say it, but maybe wait for another issue to come up with the truck or go get the latest AW flash and then it should be a non-issue for them to do it!

If not, then I sure hope there is another dealer to go to because that one doesn't seem to value the customer like they should.

Nope, that 1000 rpm idle is stock on all of them. The one they're talking about you have to set via the cruise control. It comes in at 1100, then you can raise/lower it in 50 rpm increments via the accel/coast buttons. It turns off when you touch the brake or turn the cruise off. There's a time delay too, you can't engage it on a dead cold engine. I think it has to run 3 minutes or something first.

Another side tidbit, I'm told that at least on the 6.7's, the computer doesn't register idle speeds above 1000 rpm as being idle time.
