Im getting ready to kill my kdp and then time my pump. What are the benefits to adjusting the timing. I plan on keeping my truck mods the same except for a bigger turbo not sure which turbo I'm doin yet though. What's a good site for showing timing procedures?

Decrease exhaust temperature
Increase cylinder temperatures/pressures
Increase fuel economy
Increase your output of NOx
Decrease your output of Hydrocarbons
Increase the amount of black smoke at peak torque

i experienced a little bit of a low end tq loss when i had my truck timed to 16.5 degrees, BUT its nothing a set of DV's cannot take care of Also with my setting my truck comes alive at 2100 rpms or so. If you are there in gear and you gun it, The truck will just plain rock you back, i love it...

If you want more TQ down lower, you can try the looser starwheel, farther forward plate, OR you can decrease your timing. 18 degrees is rather steep for a headgasket if its stock

I saw a 1.5 mpg increase with my timing bumped up....

This is why I do not run any timing advance, I run stock timing on my setup because the higher I put the timing the harder it was to get my load moving but with stock timing and the DV's, 4:10's, it will brake your neck on take off loaded or not. Seems like the higher I take the horsepower the more I can feel the TQ down low with stock timing.

 

I don't see a turbo listed in your sig...you must be able to get on the pedal for a whole 2, maybe 3 seconds before EGT's are over 1300*, right???

How do you pull a trailer with that much fuel, stock timing, and stock turbo?? My truck would be running 1300* on flat land like that

I never really tow and I rarely get on it hard either soo....that is until I get a bigger turbo. I just watch my EGT's really close.

 

I thought so too but the shop I get my work done at insists this works good on their customers trucks and says they run the race truck up around 20 something degrees which seems really nuts. Im having it moved down to 16.5 with my mext power upgrade just in case.

 

16 is a nice sweet spot...u dont need to go higher than 16 unless u plan to spend ALOT of time between 2500-4000rpms...16 is the best for adaily drive

 

the higher u go with the timing , u are improving perfecting the injection point at high rpms and maximing fuel use there...the more retarded the timing, the better the fuel use down low when rpms are low.....sled pullers and racers launch high and make serious power as high as 5000rpms if not more so they have timing above 20 degrees

Great improvement in response and driveablitly. I do have a little lag down low, but a set of DDP4's otta fix that

 

I saw about the same going to 16.5, the lag ain't bad, but at about 1900 HANG ON!
