when installing shift kit must i do all the steps???

i bought the superior shift kit...comes with instructions and all...anyhow my primary reason for getting it is to increase pressures in the tranny to holdmore when locked upand have a firmer "bang" type of lockup feel anyhow the first couple steps involve grinding down a side edge to allow for a new accumulator valve.....should i care about that?....imreally lookig at sthe steps to replace the spring where the line pressure adjusting screw is and setting that tomy liking accroding to insrtuctions...what about drilling the holes in the separator plate?whats that for? is that for lube whilein park?

give methe heads up...i really dont wanna drill a thing or grind in wedges into the valve body if it has nothig to dowith the pressures

Let me jump in here.

You bought a product that a company spent many hours to engineer, and you are asking non-experienced people to support modifying it?

Try it this way, do only one modification of the kit and put the VB back in and drive it to see what it does. Then remove it and do another, till you are happy.

When done you will see how much a good VB is worth!!!
Add up all the fluid $$ and put $1.00/ hr on your time.
It's your truck, do what you want.
I don't think experimenting is a good idea.

the hole mods in the separator plate are for 1-2 and 2-3 shift firmness. The wedge cut I'm not sure about. The kit should tell you exactly what each modification results in, if not, I would do the whole process, as you don't know what processes rely on another. If you skip steps, it may actually do you the opposite of good! Drilling the separator plate is not hard, just take your time and follow the instructions. Some kits have you perform mods that are "bandaids on bullet holes", and don't really address the root problems of 47 RH failure, or any dodge trans for that matter. Most failures DO have to do with loss of line pressure, but jacking up the VB usually doesn't cure the problem, just creates a false sense of security. Leaking piston seals will only leak worse with more pressure, and stock seals generally aren't designed for too high of pressures. If you do manage to hold any aditional pressure, then usually it is barely what stock specs are supposed to be anyway. If your trans is original, you show some miles on her. Be careful with the mods until you get a good COMPLETE build on the trans. 12V performance is extremely easy to come by, holding it isn't. Ask me how I know.

good luck

Chris

Since a tranny basically compares pressuresd to decide which gear to use it's really not adviseable to change just a part of the pressures and to leave the others alone. The results are inpredictable. And if you leave out some steps it might well be that the torque holding capacity is decreased while messing up shiftpoints.
The comments on the age of the tranny and the seals are valid too. If you want to go for more torque go for more tranny first. A good rebuild with some performance parts like apply lever, front clutch piston and more frictions etc is the way to go IMHO. Everything less is just band aids.
