what kind of CB antenna?

My Jeep has a drill mount Wilson 1000. I love this Antenna but I am hesitant to drill a 7/8" hole in my new Rams roof. At the same time, I think a mag mount is kind of cheesy. Should I bight the bullet and drill, or what?

What kind of antennas do you all run?

Drill the hole, I did. I would like to get the antanna you have. I have the K40 now, it's ok, but I think the wilson could do a lot better.
Heath

Re:what kind of CB antenna?

For a mounting location, there's nothing better than a "direct" roof mount as it offers an excellent gound plane for your vertical antenna. For my ham antennas I've always used Motorola 3/4" NMO mounts mounted either in the cab roof of the truck, or in the trunk lid of my auto's and have had great performance. My wife cringes when she sees me out there putting the drill to our 1 day old ride! This time though, I used the 2 Firestik cowl brackets which uses a fender bolt just under the hood for attachment, and have had reasonably good performance. While the cab mount is ideal, it does put the antenna up quite high, and could possibly strike tree branches, etc. Another possibility you could try is going with a Radiall-Larsen whip <link> using the commercial style NMO mount. It's a base loaded antenna, 53" inches high, and can be tuned for the CB band. I use one on my truck for the 10 meter ham, just above the CB band, and have worked all over the US and South America with about 35 watts. Ham Radio Outlet has everything you need if you go with this antenna. If you decide to make the hole, I would strongly recommend purchasing a Greenlee punch at Home Depot. It does a super clean job. If you'd like to see some pictures of my antenna setup, here's the link .............Tom
