Upgrade the intercooler?
Hi i was wondering if upgrading the intercooler is really worth it for a daily driver street truck and ocasional run down the track. My current mods are htt 62mm turbo 150hp injectors, adrenaline, intake, exhaust... and i keep wanting more and more. I want to make power but money doesnt grow on trees as most know and spending $1000+ on an intercooler may not be the best choice... I plan to run twins soon and bigger injectors and all the other complimenting add ons to do it right... Thanks for the advice
i hit a deer with my truck and my intercooler had a tiny leak. so i bought a replacement from US Radiators for around $500 bucks. I lost alot of boost with this intercooler. so my suggestion would be to stay with the factory stock intercooler all the way! i should take mine to a shop and have them repair it and put it back in the truck, and get a little power back.
I have a pre and post innercooler intake temp gauge.
The post cooler temp is almost always just 20°F higher than the outside (ambient) temp no mater how high the pre cooler temp is.
Pre-cooler temps range from about 150° - 350°.
This indicates to me that the stock cooler is highly efficient.
Truck is about 450 hp.

If you want a cost effictive way of cooling temps and gaining more power why not consider adding NOS to the intercooler? I am not savy on these Diesels but I do know that its a really cheap way to cool intake temps. Plus if you just run it on a button you can use it for "Track Only" use. You can even buy a used kit from ebay for less than 300. I would do that before changing an already proven intercooler. But, without dyno time/tuning, I would not expect major gains.
Unless your shooting for big power numbers or your stocker is leaking, put the $$$ somewhere else.
Mine cracked on the lower passenger side corner, a common place for 2nd Gens. I replaced mine actually with a heavier 12 valve unit and there was a difference but not enough to warrant the dollars spent. If it didn't leak in the first place, I would still have the stock one installed.
Bigger and better is not always the way to go.

The stock cooler is very efficient. My IAT's are 6-12* above ambient and up to about +40* with sustained 30-35 psi, a/c on, and 85*+ outside. That's with my cam moving 7% more air than stock. I would think an IC would only be necessary in heavy towing applications where the CFM of twins far exceeds stock.
I just noticed this is in the 2nd gen forum, sorry.. I was on tapatalk and it doesn't state the forum.. But from what I have heard they are just as good.
