Torque Converter worth the extra money

The transmission is out of a freshen up rebuild. I have be running a low stall converter for some time now, It nothing special I think it cost four or five hundred bucks at the time. I like it but still feels like a sponge with a load. I have always wondered about on of the $1300 converter with a special stater for increase amplification? Would one of these make the truck feel like it the converter is not absorbing all the power?

Thanks
Dan

Hey,
I have a manual but i will say that the shifts with a good TQ/conv Valve body would be sharper, crisper. do you feel the shifts are slipping some when you say its has a absorbed feeling? by chance does the RPM raise during the shift? With a low stall , you should be getting just that. You should be getting most or all of the engine TQ/Power to the wheels earlier. But also would need to know if you have anything else on the truck performance wise?? box/chip/programmer etc.

I would recommend you talk with a Guru Trans guy. (not like me)LOL. I would recommend you talk to the folks at sourceautomotive.biz they are great with knowledge will always help a guy out with concerns or questions even when its not their own products. they dont try and sell you stuff too. Much like Peter and bunch at south Bend clutch for us manual folks.

Also not many people who build Auto Transmissions have a lifetime warranty. sourceautomotive does.

Shifts are firm. Smarty is the main power enhancer. When the converter is locked. It feels like the power is getting to the ground, when it is up locked.........I don't know were then energy going, must be going in heat out the trans cooler.

Dan,
We have 3 trucks with auto's that have been redone. In my 93 I have a 47RH that I rebuilt here with Goerend Transmission parts, valve body, 3 disc torque converter, what he calls a 300/800, and some other parts. Very tight fluid coupling, a little too tight for trailer towing sometimes.

The previous owner of our 2001 installed a complete Goerend trans with his 400/900 converter, this is a nicer driving setup, not so terrible to drive and pull away from stop lights.

My brothers 98 has a locally rebuilt trans with what they considered a low stall converter. I'm still waiting for the low stall part, it doesn't even compare to the Goerend converters.

With a low stall converter, you trade ratio (amplification if you will) for slippage. You don't have the starting torque, but run at lower rpm's when you're pulling hard and steady. Easily made up for with engine mods.

I have 2 first gens, with Goerend low stalls in both of them. They are work horses fer sure. I managed to hurt one of them with radical engine braking. Goerend fixed it for free. My engine makes torque, and the Goerend TQ gets it to the wheels.

ended up not springing for the high dollar converter. Just got one from the guy that rebuilt it (from his supplier) $377 for a billet cover single disk 200 below stock stall. I haven't drove it much but I guess I will see. I have $1300 in a rebuild. $300 labor and rest parts. This all started with me pulling the truck in the shop to install a quieter muffler and seeing the shift shaft seal leaking, was adjusting the band wile I had the valve body out and seen the band was almost out of adjusting room.
No more trans-go shift kit, he put is own in. So far its a lot better shifter.
