torque converter to tight

Is there any one out there that feels there torque converter is to tight. Mine is fine when i am empty but when i pull a big load the turbo has a hard time spooling.. I feels like I need another gear. It throws my egts all out of wack.

My DTT TC works awesome. It is loose enough to allow spooling but tight enough to feel like a stick when empty. You may have to much pressure from the Valve body.

sounds like a shifting issue... maybe shifting too early? there is a spring in the valve body that controls the shift points. raise the shift points, spooling problem solved. fix the problem, put more power to the ground, not to mention its CHEAP.

Hey thanks for all the comments. I am not sure which converter I have for sure. I do know it is a triple disk. It just seems like when I am towing that my egts are out of control and that the motor is lugging. I thought over time the converter would loosen up a bit. I am trying to get a hold of dave to get some more info. I have heard of him building one for high elevation that is a little looser. I love the thing empty it is really fun.

They are several springs in the VB. If you dont know what your doing stay out of it abd have the builder tinker with it. Many differ spring rates that can be swaped around and vavles as well. Put the wrong springs in one place and can cause damage.

Just get in touch with dave and he will straightn you out. I had a problem with one of mine being to tight. It was a blast just driving around empty, but put a 1000lbs on or behind the truck and it couldnt get up to speed with out seeing 1800 degrees. I tried pulling the sled with it and couldnt get it over 1200 rpm and it started puking fluid. I called dave and had a new one in 5 days from when i said make it. He will take care of you.

Almost sounds like time for a bigger turbo and more fuel.

Bet it would be more fun to make enough torque to stall that thing properly than to pull a tranny...............

My converter is the 800/300 stall that Dave sells. Its fairly laggy with 3:55's and bigger tires even without a load, but once it lights, it pulls HARD. Pulling a trailer, it really puts the power down, but it takes a few seconds to get it spooled if your on a hill taking off with a big load. My EGT's are not bad though. The converter shouldnt make a huge difference in EGT's.

Actually too tight of a TC will cause higher EGT's just like short or early shifts. The motor can't spin to cool it off.

That's why its key getting the TC matched exactly to what you'll use it for. Not much fun having to pull the tranny multiple times to get it right.

I did talk with dave and he didn't seem like it was a problem. He told me to call a performance shop in california. I told them I was in the middle of doing a he351 turbo swap and they thought that would help. He also told me the elevation kills me.

look at changing the spring that controls shift points in the tranny, put in a spring for a gasser so it revs a little higher and the tighter converter will make it more efficient (putting more to the ground). and the increase in shift point will get your rpms up and keep the turbo spooled. cheap, not too time consuming, and if it doesnt work its only swapping a spring to get it back to where you are.

Even with a tight TC, he should be able to get it spooled and then be fine after that though. My TC is about as tight as they come, and even with my HX40, I have no problem pulling a trailer. Its laggy out of the hole, but as soon as i get some rpm and shift to 2nd gear, its pulling hard and EGT's are fine.

If you think its shifting too early pulling a trailer, just manually shift it. I manually shift mine quite a bit to keep it where i want it in the RPM range.

I am hoping swapping to a different turbo works. I have heard good things about switching to the 3rd gen turbo. I think dave said mine was a 900/400 t/c. I hope I can get it under control. Thanks for all of the comments.
