torque converter questions
Re:torque converter questions
During this time the truck that gets into the powerband faster and stays there could be the winner.
There are LOTS of variables that will influence which is best. I know of a few sub 13 second racers that have found their trucks to be faster by allowing the truck to accelerate unlocked through the gears and lockup as DC programing is set rather than running locked right out of the hole.
Re:torque converter questions
Well folks I do think that the use of a truck for drag racing differs a whole lot from what the majority of owners, even of bombed trucks, will do with it. So, since the application is different, the setup will be different.
Personally I do not intend to drag race my truck. I do have a power edge pulse. So this will put me somewhere in the 250 hp crowd. That's roughly 1/3rd of the overmotivated undervalvers. I love this truck for relaxed driving under all weather conditions, with freight that does not like being thrown around in the bed.
And I can only state that the solution I chose for my tranny fits my needs perfectly.
I do like to ask questions, put out speculations etc to learn more about the topic.
And I do not understand why the emotions are that high on trannies, but not on fueling boxes, injectors, turbos, gauge mounts, deodorants, sausages, flowers, etc. ???

Have a nice time, stay safe!

AlpineRAM
Re:torque converter questions
Stakeman,
What a person needs to do is try different setups for their application to see what works best. Sometimes a tight TC helps more than a loose one, then again under different applications the opposite is true. I was NOT aiming at any companies products just passing along a little bit of info that several of us have come across.
Horsepower, torque, and the rpm's at which each of these is at its peak and the range peak power is made all come into play. No two trucks are identical so each tranny setup should be individually tuned to get the most out of it.
Just my $.02 worth.
Doug
PS: I think we should either debate gauge mounts or deodorant next

PSYCHORAM,
Your statement of "if you had two identical trucks side by side in their "power band" the truck with the torque converter LOCKED will win every time over the one unlocked," is correct. But in a drag race this is not the situation being utilized. The trucks have to go from a dead stop and accelerate into the powerband and continue shifting through the gears. I don't lock out of the hole...I lock at 15mph...you don't get prizes for going fast once...you get the trophies by being consistent. Prior to my transmission upgrade by truck was 15.0 in the quarter...not that big of a deal...now 13@105mph....2 whole seconds...2 First Place Summit Wins...3 Second Place Wins...a crap load of 3rd's...and over 350 successful launches since August to date. I don't think I am doing ANYTHING wrong. Not ment to be a flame, just trying to let people see the real side of Diesel Performance.
On a lighter note....my favorite arm pit purfume is the good ole arm and hammer...HA

Re:torque converter questions
I do also think that competition is a very good thing- otherwise we would have stayed with banging rocks together.
I think that the statement that competition weeds out the weak ones is mande in a slight misunderstanding of darwinism. C.Darwin said that the fittest will survive. He didn't mean the strongest, but the breed that is adapted best to the situation. So a diversity of situation will necessarily lead to a diversity of breeds.

AlpineRAM
