I just installed a #4 plate. All I can say is WOW. One problem - I have way too much smoke at launch. I've tried sliding the AFC back along with adjusting the star wheel - no luck. I finally slid the plate back about 1/16&quot; and the smoke is gone along with some of that WOW. The lever was adjusted at each plate location too. Any ideas???<br><br>Paul

What kind of boost numbers are you seeing? 35-40 should just about clear up your smoke. If you're not making that, you need a boost controller. <br><br>I would set the plate in the stock position, slide the AFC back 1/8&quot; - 3/16&quot; from full forward, and adjust the spring to about the middle of the access hole. (I like to run the spring loose- star wheel almost all the way to the front, but get more smoke on takeoff).

 

I have the boost elbow adjusted for just shy of 40 psi max. The smoke problem is at pre-boost, right when I step on the pedal to start moving the truck from a stop. Yeah, EGT's will get high but it takes a long time to reach 'the melting point'. I've received all sorts of advice but am looking for what will help the most (other than sliding the plate back). What's been suggested is:<br>1) AFC spring kit<br>2) Valet switch<br>3) Adjust the diaphram screw on the back of the AFC<br>4) Bigger turbo<br>5) Adjust timing to 15°-16°<br><br>Any help is appreciated...

 

My $.02-<br>I would try to put the plate close to the stock position, maybe forward just 0.030&quot; - .040&quot;.<br><br>From there, I would really think that you could get rid of most of the smoke by adjusting the AFC. Your plate is hotter, but I have the big nozzles. My smoke level is not totally unreasonable. With the 370s I do get a good sized puff of black before it cleans up to brown and then almost clear. <br><br>The valet thing would just be an expensive way to keep yourself from giving it full throttle. You can do the same by just not pushing your foot down as far.<br><br>The timing thing would be good. It will likely decrease smoke a bit and INCREASE POWER, also reducing EGTs. I need to do mine sometime. If the timing has slipped, you'll get more smoke, but that doesn't really sound like your problem.<br><br>As for the screw on the back of the AFC, I don't know much about it. Check with Al at Piers. He can probably tell you a bunch.<br><br>Maybe one of the springs in the AFC spring kit will work better for you than stock. They are intended for the situation where smoke can't be adjusted away using the stock spring.<br>This may be the very situation you're up against.<br><br>Good luck, and let us know what you come up with.

 

I don't think the screw on the back of the AFC housing will do what you want. I think what you need is the spring kit. I wish I could add you smoke to mine <br>DM01

 

Get a AFC Spring kit!!!<br><br>At my shop I will not even put in a Hotter fuel plate without a AFC Kit. And I have satisfied many a customer by just moving his stock plate some and installing a AFC spring kit. Alittle timing is also a great help.. <br><br>The AFC kit lets you have a great launch and keep the smoke under control. In my opinion these are a Must... Sorry Guys,<br><br>I didn't mean to insult anyone. I was referring to the professional mechanics &amp; diesel experts. I talked to a number of shops that told me &quot;#4 is too big, go with a #5&quot;. Kurt, on the other hand, not only explained how to eliminate the smoke but also why it does. Tom,<br><br>I'm running the light spring. No smoke when I'm light on the throttle; a good amount when I hit it. The heavier spring gave me more &quot;pedal room&quot; with no smoke but it felt like a little less go power unless I was at higher boost.<br><br>Paul
