Where at in the 1997 CTDs is the silencer ring located and how do i take it out? Does it hurt the motor or help it and does anyone have any suggestions on low cost modifications for a 97 2500 CTD

Talking silencer ring

The silencer ring is at the air inlet side of the turbo, you have to
remove the snap ring in front of the silencer ring to pull it out leave the snap ring out afterwards, cheap mod's would afc adjustment, timing, installing a BHAF, exhuast. good luck happy BOMBING!

BHAF afc adjustment

A BHAF is a big honk'n air cleaner (cummins marine) you remove the stock air box and install the bhaf in place. The afc (air fuel control) is on top of the pump it controls the fuel rate to turbo boost to prevent smoking, you can adjust it to get more fuel early but you will also get smoke.

Napa carries them. Do a search and you should be able to come up with the part numbers.

I have had my BAHF for about 3 months. I just took my first long trip with it (875 miles) and I got 18.3 mpg @ 70-75 mph. I also took out my silencer ring and it sounds really cool, like a mini semi. I would say it probably gave me 1 mpg. When you install your filter make sure you put in the heat shield. The pattern is on here somewhere. Phox Mulder or the Dr. probably know where its at. It cost me 2 bucks at the junk yard for the metal and 30 minutes to build.

Mitch:

Go to the tech facts section at the top of the page. The part numbers for 4 or 5 different manufacturers are listed there. You can get one of them from NAPA. Just give them the numbers listed there.

BTW - if you use the NAPA part number listed in the tech facts (which is the right one) and enter it into the NAPA website, you get something silly like a toothbrush or some such nonsense. Take the part number to a dealer and they can set you up.

Also, there is a marine version of the BHAF, but it costs a lot more than the standard ones that most of us run.
