Replacing batteries in pairs?
When I got my truck it had the taller, narrower batteries in it.
I swapped in a set of nearly 3 year old batteries that are shorter, but overall wider and bigger when my buddy sold his old Ford diesel. The old ones were 600 something CCA, then new ones are 880CCA.
Anyways, I noticed it was getting a little boggy when I went to start the truck in 30-40 degree weather, which just isn't going to cut it when temps get to 20 below around here.
The batteries are still under the pro-rated part of the warranty so I got them tested. One put out only 54CCA, and the other around 600CCA.. It indicated that the "good" one needed to be recharged. I assume that is because the other battery was drawing the whole system down.
So I got the old battery replaced and paid $28.00 for the $58.00 battery because of the pro-rated warranty. So now I have a brand new battery and a 3 year old battery in the truck.
Should I replace the other one or leave it until necessary?

I did the same thing that you did when i had my old ford, I replaced one battery at a time, and all it did was just put more wear and tear on the newer battery, The batteries work in unison to start the truck, and if one battery is better, stronger or holds more of a charge than the other one, then the newer one will pay more deeply to start up the truck. I just replace both of mine at the same time and at least know that they are as equal as possible.
Sorta the same scenario when you charge the batteries on ur diesel, You hook up to one battery, and since they are hooked in unison, you charge them both up anyways, The charge function and energy drawing function work the same on both batteries, so might as well have them as equal as possible...

The guy that had my truck before me replace just one of the batteries...
Two days after I bought it they were both DEAD, one would not even power up the tester at Sears. So I got two Red Tops
