No it's not necessary. It does offer a clean way to tap the pump wire.

It was designed as way to pierce the pump wire without leaving the tell-tell hole and voiding engine warranty.

They no longer need to see the hole to void the warranty.

Not to mention that most VP44 equipped trucks are out of warranty, or very close to being out of warranty.

IMHO, not worth it anymore, just solder that sucker.

Zero boost at idle is normal. Most say hwy driving not towing stock is 8-10psi, not on the throttle just cruising. the gauge jumping while on the go peddle to me says everything is working just fine.

Good luck.

Edit.

reread you post and your getting boost reading just sitting in park flooring the truck? Or are you in gear holding the breaks?

I do beta testing so the stealth cover is perfect for me, as we are unhooking and rehooking to the pump wire fairly often, and I want a secure connection.

I was actually installing mine last night, and of course, i drop, and lose the freakin security bit

Jump around....no. Jump up at WOT.... sure. Good test is boost on level road with cruise control at 70mph. As stated 8-10 psi. Better test is what reading do you get at WOT. May peak but should level off at 20-22 psi.
You Automatic...or manual tranny?

Without a 'Box' or a boost fooler, you should hit max allowable boost on a stock 01.... 20-22 psi. If not reaching that high...may be an air leak. If going higher....wastegate not working and truck will defuel (I believe).

Could be the first sign of a weak LP. Don't let it fry your IP.
