power ?

well i have put about 7000 miles on my cummins now and in all honesty am not impressed. am towing a lightweight 40' gooseneck with 2500 lbs of horsebuggys and it is working hard to maintain speed going up graduall grades. when "pushed the temp gauge goes up to 215 and the truck acts like you shut the key off (engine continues to run) for a few seconds and then takes off again. it may do it several times ,loosins speed all the while, until i top the grade and start downhill then the heat gauge goes back down and it runs ok again.
\ have had it into my local dodge dealer but don't think they have a knowledgable deisel mecanic on staff. (wesst micigan)
i traded a 318 in on this and in all sinceity, the 318 did as good a job at towing and didn't use much more fuel.

That doesnt sound right. From what I've read about these trucks, overheating is not a common thing. I know from experience that an auto with 3:55 gears is definately not the best setup for towing but it should perform better than a 318. Have you checked your fuel pressure? I dont have any answers but someone probably will.

Make sure they check, or replace your fuel filter.

Make sure the oil bottle at the front of the engine is not full. It will coat the radiator with an oil film that turns to a plugged radiator.

portland is just down the road from me. am in nashvlle, hastings area. i am going to print this entire page off and take to dealer with me. the guys at my dealership are a bunch of good guys who really try to do me right. they have been servicing my gassers for a number of years.
hopefully they will be able to figure out this diesel thing.

Herb one thing I am absolutley sure of is that a CTD that is running right will out pull a 318 or 360 or 350GM... by leaps and bounds and usually do it at 3-5 mpg beter mileage. so something is not right. If the Dodge dealer can't figure it out then is there a Cummins shop near by. There are some good places over here on the East side P.M. me If you need a name.

Sounds like a boost leak to me. Check everything for leaks. The Cummins will outpull a 318 without a problem.

Get a gauge on the lift pump and make sure it maintains more than 5psi tot he VP44 at all times. The symtoms you described could be a lift pump going out.

My lift pump was junk when i got the truck, Drove it for a good three weeks and pulled the boat once with it. Was not happy, Run fine. Run the same after i fixed it. Hope it don't go out now. Price of that truck keeps going up.

You've got someting odd going on. Sounds like a lift pump problem, but the temp you're getting is weird too. I pull 20,000lbs regulary, and I never get over 200 degrees. Another thing is, a lightweight 40 foot trailer can't be too lightweight. If you were pulling that with a 318, the diesel should be a night and day difference.
