Thaks for the replies removing 30 lbs of matiarel with a dremel doesnt sound like fun at all I think I will just pay somebody to do it.

 

Hmm - that seems like an awful lot - probably ~20% of the head... sure sounds like too much!

5# on a V8 head should be plenty...

 

These heads weigh in somewhere around 200lbs. I'd imagine 30lbs is on the far side of the scale but it wouldn't surprise me. Port the intake and exhaust side out. I could see it.

 

Ehh, I wouldn't say 200lb... I lifted one a while back and it was heavy but no 200 pounds IMO. That would be nearly impossible for even a big guy to carry by himself it it was even possible at all. I think it is closer to 125-ish... But like I said I haven't lifted one in a while lol.

 

I picked up the head that Brian gave to Dan in the back of his truck with one hand... I'm pretty sure it was less than 200#

On second thought, that big boy had to weigh over 200# 'cause I had to grab it with all 4 fingers!

 

I could see the head being 30lbs lighter if you mill the intake off, but my Raymac head has a pretty good amount of port work, and it didn't feel any lighter by hand, so I can't imagine it being more than a few lbs lighter.

there isn't a ton of material to remove before you hit water on these heads... You can get really agressive with them, but you're going to get the most bang for the buck with mild port work. blend the bowls, take the guides down a little, blend the valve to the face, get a good valve job... done. You can fully work the exhaust ports... this will add a lot of time/effort, but your biggest gains are going to come in the bowls.

 

Hey Forrest - how would you rate your experience with Raymac?

 

I did my own just like Forrest said & the difference is like night & day,when I hit the go pedal,the turbo spools quicker & the egt's are alot less.After I done mine I read you should leave the exhaust ports smaller than the ex manifols so you don't get reverse flow.guess next time I have it off I'll have the open up the ats alittle more.Oh,it took me around 10 hrs to get done& matbe 3 days till my nose got cleaned out.

So in other words I MIGHT be able to juggle it? Jk, I can't wait to get my new one, it just sucks it will be atleast a month or more from now Hopefully my new job will provide me with steadier paychecks and much better hours so I can weld some bumpers on the side Then I can spend it all on the head even sooner

 

Anyone done any flow work after some porting to see what kind of improvements your getting?

I about got the urge to find a head to play around with to see what it will do.

I find it hard to buy the 30lbs being removed unless your completely reshaping the entire intake an exaust.

I wouldnt expect more then a few pounds on a basic blend job.

 

I am very happy with the porting and 5 angle valve job on my 96 5 speed tow rig.. Quick Diesel 64 & DDP3's along with ported exhaust manifold makes for a KILLER towing combo!

The pulling truck isn't together yet but I bet she's gonna SCREAM!
