Plugging the wastegate?
Plugging the wastegate?
Gentlemen -

I know this has been discussed, but I'm in need of advice. From ox's post, he is wondering how to "turn up" a turbo. That made me wonder what would happen IF you plugged the wastegate tube. Anybody? I have a stock turbo that has a small peen insert into the wastegate tube that came with my Banks kit. Say what you will about Banks, but this thing works. Mine puts out 24# of boost now; any idea what would happen if I plugged it completely? I hear guys state they are routinely putting out 30# plus, and I'm wondering how with a stock unit. Mine is the hx-35 btw...Would this create any fueling or pressure concerns?
Re:Plugging the wastegate?
FMF..plugging the wastegate, will deactive the wastegate fuction. If you do not have a "boost fooler", ie. fueling box etc., you will set an over boost code in the computer, and your truck will start to de-fuel. you will never achieve higher boost levels. With a "boost fooler", with a plugged wastegate, stock turbo, stock injectors, you would be in the 28-30psi range. With a fueling box, upgraded injectors, your boost can go as high as 40 psi. The max. boost for the Hx-35 (safe) is around 32psi. Exceeding this limit will only be a matter of time, turbo failure will occure.

Steve
Re:Plugging the wastegate?
Piers sells a tunable wastegate plug that will allow you to dial in the wastegate to fit your needs. Like the stock HX35 at 32 psi. This sounds like the best approach, if the goal is to raise boost pressures and you have a boost fooling box.

Caution though: if you disconnect your box (or it fails) and you leave the wastegate plug in, you'll probably set an overboost code!
