Is there such thing as too much for CA and CCA? Like is there so much that it could be harmful? I was thinking about replacing my current batteries and I was going to go with the Group 31 Optima Yellow-Tops but I like the looks of these Odyssey batters, and I was thinking about going with dual 1700s. What do you guys think?

 

They might make your front end ride too low.

Out here in the desert we can get away with a lower cca. The higher the cca usually means the plates in the batterys are closer together which means with the heat they can warp and short out. Big case, with lower cca will last longer out here.

 

Totally different when you live in the COLD. Especially with an ESPAR and cold temps, you need big juice and lots of reserve. Batteries dont last too long here either (especially if they freeze)

 

Well it gets pretty cold here at nights in the winter, usually -30 C and in the summer it can get up to 36-37 C. So what do you guys suggest for a battery, what I like to do is buy something so I never have to worry about it again for at LEAST 10-15 years, if not ever. Thats why I will have another thread up soon about my front end experience when I get the parts. Anyways what do you guys think? Should I get the Optimas, Odysseys, or something else?

 

Well, I hope you arent serious. Batteries, no matter what brand or kind have a specific lifespan. Some last longer than others but to think you will never buy another battery is really unrealistic.

 

No I know that no battery is going to last forever, but which battery do you think will last the longest, I still have the stock ones in my 94 Ram so I think I am doing pretty good, but they are getting weak, so I am looking at the Odysseys, I am going to call for a quote on two 1700s, what do you guys think? Or should I go with two 1200s, help me out here.

Nope, doesn't fly with me.

I've never had a battery last longer than 5 years, and those are few and far between.
Especially with the temperatures you see up there eh.

If this is indeed a true statement, the optimas or similiar will outlive you.

When I replaced my '95's stock batteries after five years I stuck the one that was still good in one of my JD tractors. Still going strong after ten years.

Climate has a lot to do with it, hot places seem to shorten battery life more than cold.

 

Alright I will double check, is there something I can tell if they are the stock batteries? THey dont say anything on them at all, and the guy before me said that he had never replaced them, but he was the second owner, so I am wondering, but they are realllly weak, they wont last the winter, so I need to make a decision,

1) Group 31 Optima Yellow-Tops
2) Odyssey 1200 or 1700.
3) ?

What do you guys think?

I dont know that much about the Oddseys, if you dont mind spending the $$ get the Group31D Optimas. I dont think you can go worng with them.

Unless you have an Espar heater, I think regular Red Top Optimas (Group 34/78) would serve you well and save you a bunch of cash.

actually Bill those are the exact batteries I just put in...along with 2/0 custom battery cables and military style battery clamps.

While they are a very good battery - they are still a lead acid and will likely leak at some point.

I would rather have a more expensive battery than have to deal with corroded battery terminals on a below zero morning.
Make that any time of day or temperature.
