Onboard Air required parts?
Onboard Air required parts?
I just got a deal on onboard air.
(free ;D ;D )
Not sure what I need to make it work.
(It's coming out of an old TV Live Truck, it was used to raise and lower the microwave antenna).
This is what I think it has.
Compressor (39amp)
Relay to hook directly to battery
Switch to activate relay
80psi cutoff switch on tank.
Frame mounted Tank, looks like about 5 gallon? (needs a bit of sanding and paint)
Probably assorting tubing of some sort.
I need to remove from donor truck tomorrow and need to know all that I need to remove.
And what I will need to purchase to make it work on my truck.
I'll be mainly using it to power some air horns, but would be nice to be able to fill a tire in the middle of nowhere.
Future plans might include an set of ARB Air Lockers.
Thanx in advance.

Update.

Took a look at dodgram.org (Fritz's site) and got some ideas.

Would like some "personal experience" input before I tackle this though.

phox
Re:Onboard Air required parts?
phox,
I haven't attempted to install onboard air yet to my truck, but I am helping a friend get his air horns set up on his F350. Sounds like you will get most of what you need from the "donor" truck if you just want the capability of having a tank that is filled from a compressor. I would put some sort of over current protection device in between the battery and the compressor (like a circuit breaker or fuse). If you want to add air horns in the future, you will need a 12 volt solenoid and a switch to operate the solenoid. I have seen installs that use aluminum tubing that is 1" x 1" square and cross drilled, this is used to bolt the tank to. Then you can use the same material and very long bolts to go around the frame and bolt it all together so as not to have to drill holes in the frame. Sounds like the tank has an over pressure relief valve, make sure it has a drain petcock to get rid of moisture build up.
Good luck.

Re:Onboard Air required parts?
I'm hopeing the existing frame mount will match up to holes already in my frame, or at least have enough mount to drill holes in the mount to match up with the frame.
(It's coming from a mid 80's Chevy full size Blazer)

Not haveing looked at it yet, I'm thinking the existing tubing will either be shot, or too short for what I want.

Will definately need a horn switch, as it originally had a manual valve to raise and lower the mast.

The tank has a water drain petcock on it, but engineers here (TV Station where I work) aren't sure it works, so I might have to get a new one of those.

I'll be taking it all apart either tomorrow or Sunday, just hoping it's all in workable condition and still has all the parts.

phox
