Onboard air compressor
Onboard air compressor
Has anybody ever figured out a way to get a York or similar air compressor into a 98 Dodge with a Cummins?

The Jeep guys do it.....I think it would be worthwhile in my truck too.
Re:Onboard air compressor
Try going to www.onboardair.com last I heard they were going to make a bracket for it. Not sure if they did but might be worth the call to check on the progress.
Re:Onboard air compressor
I heard on the kit you need a Nip. Alternator. I looked on the back of mine and it says bosch but I don't know if it is Nipendenso or not..... Any way to tell? Numbers?
Re:Onboard air compressor
Depends on how much air you guys wanna run have a look at THIS They sell compressors and I have bought from them before another is THIS I have also bought from this site with success I personally run (2) Viair 550 compressors to run my (2) 9 gallon tanks if you just want it for filling tires then you don't need this much but its fast ;D
Re:Onboard air compressor
i have some on board air compressors off of a m35a2 military trucks. i was looking at installing one on my dodge just to have it handy. the military compressores use a unloader that unloads the pump at 125 psi and kicks back in at 90. so it does not need a clutch. if anyone local wants to figure out how to put one on there truck, i will give them one, if they build me a bracket for my truck. mike

There are some problems with running the air brake air compressor on our trucks.
1. They turn all of the time, having a small cost in fuel
economy, for the short time they are pumping air. In a big truck they cycle on and off every 5 minutes or so. In our trucks you could drive for days without the compressor cycling.
2. Almost all of them need to have pressureized oil and a return line plumbed to them.
3. Most are water cooled. Again plumbing.

I just installed the Kilby On-board air system. THe kit is really clean design and a simple install. It only comes on when needed and supplies more air than I can use. It has self contained oil and no water lines to plumb.
Re:Onboard air compressor
I have been searching through Cummins parts books to try and get a gear driven Holset pump, which were standerd on any of the larger trucks equipped with air brakes, to work. I think I may have run into a little snag with the power steering pump being in the way though. >
Re:Onboard air compressor
iron horse
The Holset air compressor has some advantages and some problems.
Advantage: It is Cummmins and designed for the engine. It is a clean installation.
Dis-advantage: 1. The stosck P/S vacuum pump will not work with it. 2. Even the ZF pump used on the F*rd trucks will hit the left motor mount. 3. You will have to engineer a remote reservior for the P/S. 4. It is not an easy install on the engine itself. 5. Lots of plumbing oil, water and air. 5. Because it is an unloading type of governor the compressor runs all of the time drawing HP from the engine. A big truck the compressor cycles alot more than it will in our trucks with out air brakes. 6. the cost of a new compressor is $1000, plus the brackets and other parts needed (P/S pump $450) etc.
I was planning on doing it myself. I went the Kilby On-Board air set-up. His kit was $200, I had the compressor. It took me 2 hours to install. It only runs when I turn it on. It pumps more air than I can use. I am way ahead of the game.
