Odd Transmission Performance

Just installed a complete Goerends tranny with his 300/800 Triple Disc Convertor. I've got an issue with i think the stall speed being too low. My truck is very unresponsive off the line. The convertor looks to flash to about 1200-1300 rpm and then takes forever and a day to get to 1800 rpm, but once it hits 1800 hold on. I also notice under part throttle shifts that once the tranny shifts 1-2 or 2-3 the motor returns to that 1400 rpm range and lugs the hell outta the motor till it hits that magic 1800 rpm and then she off like a rocket. My first thought was to just add injectors to loosen up the convertor by adding my power, but after talking to several shops they seem to agree that will not solve the problem, due to the power not being added low enough in the RPM band. I am located at 5800 feet but I do drive to sea level quite often. I need to tow with this truck and the lag isnt helping matters. I know Dave Goerend will take care of me no matter what the issue, but I gotta have a place to start so I can atleast start trouble shooting if there is indeed a problem. Any and all input is helpful. Any questions post away.

Sounds like the converter is stalling to low. I'd prefer to have one that stalls at about 16-1800rpms.

That's exactly my thoughts, but I also dont think I want to drop to a higher stall. Dave Goerends has only one other TC that has more stall than my current TC. He said it was better than stock but it really close to a stock type TC. With the primary duty of this truck being to tow, I feel that switching to a TC with more stall is just gonna add more heat and if I add more power later on I'm afraid I'll be blowing through the convertor like I used to on my stock setup.

Anyone with this exact TC (Goerends 300/800) on a truck with the same mods. I'd like to see if it is a altitude issue that can be corrected with power mods or is it somethign that I'm just gonna have to live with.

I have the same converter in my 1st gen, probably running around the same power as yours now. She's a little sluggish coming off the line with a trailer on, maybe a little smokey too if your not careful with the go pedal. But it deffinately hooks up and goes once the turbo lights (went to a WH1C/12 wasted gated to help spool quicker) up at around 1500 rpm on my rig.

JMO, but I'll live with one thats too tight rather than deal with another loose one again.

I'm going to a tractor pull on saturday so I'm going to have around 11,000 lbs on the trailer. We'll see how it does with that.

Have you tried going through the gears manually...as a short term fix at least?
I somethimes run into what you are talking about...when mine shifts into third to quickly and I'm sitting at 1400-1500 rpm. Holding it in second to over 30 mph helps a lot... on my tranny!

Note: was not a problem till I went to 315's.

When I'm heavy, I'm driving around at 400 hp ...... more or less.
Very different set up, I know, but it's worth trying, if you haven't already.

It sounds like you got his low stall converter. The only way I think you're going to eliminate the sluggish off the line is with lots of smoke. The star wheel needs cranked. Otherwise, you will never have power. The Cummins doesn't have much power without the turbo so if you're stall is that low, you're turbo is not kicking in. I think I have the 1,600 stall converter from Dave. It works great. When he says it is not much different from stock, I think he is referring to a new stock convertor. The triple lock will definitely hold power better than stock.

so, I see 2 options, create more smoke at low rpms to gain power or put higher stall converter in to gain rpms so turbo is spooling.

Just my opinion.

I went to the pull on saturday up in Gilbert, PA at the West End Fair Grounds in case anybody knows the area and terrain.

This is what I took. Added up is somewhere around 23,000lbs gross combined, I haven't had it all on a scale yet at the same time. BTW both got 1st in their classes.

Manually shifting the trans is necessary with that much weight, it would shift too early for me. Taking off from a stop, it will smoke bad unless you roll into the throttle easy, then its not too bad. My RPM's would flash up to 1800 when the turbo spooled up. Lockup in all forward gears really made it nice in some places where the speed limit is lower.
The guy following me was complaining about soot on his window. It was getting knocked loose from in the pipes.
