Need your help

I am new to the diesel world. I have had my truck a little over 6 mos. I am as dumb as a box of rocks when it comes to my diesel truck, but I am trying to learn as much as I can and you folks on this forum know it all.

I purchased my truck as a bank repo (notice the name of my truck, Dirk's Lie) I don't know if it has any mod's. The only thing I know is the air filter is not stock.

With that said. I need help.
My plans are to put a full complement of gauges on it (on the post)
I have a chance to purchase a used Hypertech Power Programmer III for a 1998-2002 Dodge Ram cost is $175.00

Can I use this programmer, should I buy it and hold on to it until I get my gauges installed, should pass it up.

I don't plan on going with a lot of mod's just feel I need to see what my engine is doing and may need a little more power every once in a while, when towing my 5th wheel.

What should I start with, what should I do.

I value your opinions and know your comments will be in my best interest.

Thanks in advance for your guidance.

I would get the gauges installed before I do anything as for the hyper chip cant give you any info I have never delt with them but most will give a milage and power boost ,how much , the gauges will give a better starting point for that

Agreed. Anything that can increase fueling really requires you to have gauges first.

With a 2000 truck you're going to want boost, EGT and fuel pressure gauges. The requirement for the fuel pressure gauge comes in because the stock lift pump design on trucks with the 24 valve engine is marginal. The expensive injection pump requires a minimum of 5 - 10 psi fuel pressure, depending on conditions, and if your lift pump suddenly only starts putting out 2 psi you want to know it immediately and not be stranded in the middle of nowhere.

There are definitely mods that you can do which don't require gauges (better intake and exhaust are always safe) but the benefit provided by gauges far outweighs the cost. You might try looking at other boxes--I know that some of the ones Edge is currently making include a display for at least boost and EGT, and of course provide mileage and performance benefits.
