Maybe a fast idle cam (can't figure out why you would have that), a valve to turn on propane or water injection?

Man I'm just guessing. Is it a switch, a lever, a pull **** (like on a cable). Sorry, it sounds like your gonna need to climb under the truck or take some things apart and look for wires or cable, an actuator, or a solenoid. Maybe something for a plow?, maybe it had an in the bed fuel tank at one time and this was for switching tanks? Kevin

Could be for an exhaust brake.
Here is a picture of member FiverBob's setup for a Jacob's exhaust brake:

Could be a cad disconect, so you can disengage the 4x4 & have a 2 wheel low. Good for backing up a trailer. I have Bob V's 2 wheel low kit in my 2001, works great & it is mounted to the 4x4 shift lever with a red pull ****. Hope this helps.

Looks very familiar too this type of pull out ****. It doesn't feel like a cable. More like a click.

dont know how many diesel guys run them...but it could be for a cut-out...pull the **** and dump the exhaust right under the cab or bed for lots of noise when racing...then close it up and use the regular exhaust when driving down the highway

I'll bet it's a front axle disconnect, like tankeryanker said.

Put the truck into 4x Low, and rock back and forth with your new button first in one position, then the other. Watch the dash 4x4 indicator light- if it goes out with the button, you've got the 2 Wheel Low feature, which is very handy for backing up trailers S-L-O-W-L-Y.

I use mine all the time...

I 3rd that.

Check the front axle for a small box.
This box will have the cable from that **** attached to it instead of the vaccum lines it had originally.

If you back up a trailer in 4 LOW and try to turn sharp the divetrain tends to bind up and makes turning sharp very difficult. Often when backing with a trailer up you have to turn sharp to position the trailer. Much easier in 2 wheel drive.

o.k...... Generally truning sharp isn't real necesary backing up. In fact try not to do it.
(I'm a "class 1" driver so I've had lots of practice)
I just wondered if you would dammage your truck by going backwards in 4low or something weird that's all

2 low works very good backing a 7500lb 5er up an inclined driveway that is also narrow, a lot less heat generated in the trans dept also.
