looking for new tires.

i'm looking for new tires on my truck already after only 25k miles the michelins are gone. i'm looking for 285/75/16 or 305/70/16's. the biggest thing i tow is my 30 wilderness which has a weight distributioin hitch on it so i need something that will hold up to that. anyone have a good tire choice out there that they're happy with? i like the bfg's and goodyears, but they're a little expensive.

The tires I got are good, but not cheap. If you're lookin for cheap you can stop reading now.
I got Nitto Terra Grapplers. I wanted something more agressive that a BFG AT, but quiter than a BFG MT. I talked to several people and they were happy with them, so I bought them. I am very happy with them myself. They so extremely well in the rain, and I don't have to lock the hubs on wet grass, unlike my Michelins.
they have other lines, which may be less expensive.

http://www.nittotire.com/tireline.asp

Chris

Re:looking for new tires.

I talked to many dealers when researching my new wheels and tires, and the most consistent recommendation for long wear and good mileage was for Bridgestones. Surprised me, but so many dealers said it that I bought a set of M-724F's in 245/70R19.5 from Rickson.com. They've been shipped, along with the wheels, and tracking shows them to be well on their way. Should be here Thurs morning, and I'll take pics and post them. Rickson has been really great to deal with, and went all out to get my wheels to me in time for vacation. Many thanks to Heather and Dan. Lar.

Re:looking for new tires.

I just mounted a set of Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo's and am quite pleased with the results. My stock Michelins were 265's. The Revo's have to be 285's to have a D rating and are 8 plies. They are fairley aggressive and have virtually no road noise. They were rated well for wear, wet traction, and road noise. They come with white letters and are quite a good looking tire. Re:looking for new tires.

I agree with Chris... The Nitto's are awesome! They are 10 ply,
Agressive, quiet, and sticky enough. I put them on my Daughters Tahoe 4X4 in the 305 X 70 X 16's and even though they are 10 ply (E) they ride nice too. They wear is great so far.

If they had made them in the 36X14.5X16.5 I would have given them serious consideration for my truck.

Something seems to have changed with the Michelins because people were getting a tremendous amount of miles out of them as OEM's and mine looked sad when I took them off at 15,000? miles.

Besides I now avoid French companies such as Michelin when it doesn't shoot me in the foot to do so.

I plead ignorance on where the Nitto's are made...

Re:looking for new tires.

My stock Michelin's were completely bald at 6000 miles. ;D I had a set of Goodyear Wrangler ATS in a 305/70/16. Got 20K out of them before they were bald (no burnouts). I went and bought a set of Dominator Sport AT ($100/tire) in a 305/70/16. Nice tire. Don't know how the mud traction is (the Goodyear was a great mud tire although it was an all terrain). Quiet tire. I've got 16K on them now and they still look brand new. I'd go with a set of these again but they don't make them in a 315/75/16. :'(

Re:looking for new tires.

Procomp has AT and MT made in 305/70/16 and 315/70/16 and many more. Both the AT and MT are a quiet, smooth ride. They last over 30K already on a 9000# Excursion. nd still have about 20K atleast left on them.

Re:looking for new tires.

I love the Cooper Discoverer A/T. A little more aggressive tread while still holding the E rating. I have 235's because of duals. The 285' look a lot nicer though. Pretty quiet, and were decent in the snow last winter. My back end can still get squirrelly in puddles at high speed, but I'm sure that's due to duals. The front keeps it's bite. I use to like the Good Year Wrangler ATS on my chevy, but they seemed to ware more than these are.

25000 on michelins?
That bites. I got 75000 on my first set of six and I pull up to 26000 pounds. Something don't sound right. I could have gone 80000 but wanted new stuff.

Re:looking for new tires.

Unless your constantly haulling a load, I'm sure the 6 tires wouldn't be getting worked as hard as four.

Re:looking for new tires.

Yeah but even so, 25000 miles? Not a very good selling point for an expensive tire. I rotate mine every 9000 miles too and air them down to 70 front and 65 rear.

Re:looking for new tires.

Problem with duallys and in-town driving, is all those tight left and right turns drags the inner or outer dually tires increasing wear.

MY problem is with the increased stability of the dually rears, I tend to take exit ramps/ turns a little faster than posted speeds accelerating inside/ outside edge wear on the fronts. :

It's not a truck........it's a 7,500lb diesel-powered sports car with an 8 foot trunk. ;D

I'm planning on putting Michelins on it when my current tires are replaced.

Re:looking for new tires.

Hey Ed, when you get ready to buy, let me know. Maybe we can get a deal buying a bunch-o-tires together. I'll be ready in a few thousand miles for the next set.
