Question Leaky exhaust andf power?

howdy,

1999 2500 5.9 turbo 24 v automatic a/c - all stock

my exhaust system let go around the muffler and tailpipe in a few spots. going to order another however i do have a question...

i noticed what i think to be a little more "turbolag" when starting from a dead stop in first gear since the exhaust got leaky. i'll assume it's making the exhaust "breathe" better - less back pressure? will this cut down on the initial power at low rpms until enough gasses come out to spool the turbo as the rpms increase?

thanks

More turbo lag is from more restriction, not less. Do you have an exhaust leak around where the exhaust manifold is bolted to the head, or between the manifold and the turbo? Any leaks in those places will cause reduced energy to spin the turbo and higher exhaust temps (EGTs).

Get an exhaust system with a free flowing muffler ( or no mufler if you like ). It will help spool up (reduce lag). The muffler could be breaking down inside, slowing things down. If you have a catalytic convertor, it could be getting plugged with soot.

Is it possible you are actually noticing more power from the turbo actually being able to spool up? from less restriction? Now that you are going to "Have" to replace the exhaust, consider a larger exhaust system to allow for better breathing. It shouldn't cost very much more. 4" is readily available. Check out some of the suppliers on this site.
