Kenworth/Peterbilt sound in my Dodge?
I haven't found the youtube videos mentioned above yet but I did see a lot of amazing trucks, especially the truck pulls. I got a Superchips tuner and ran it for a year, after which I blew a 2 trannys. Since then, I put the tuner back on stock setting and haven't had any more trouble. Here's my question, how do these guys with major performance mods keep from destroying trannys, clutches, etc?
what your hearing is your turbo still spooled when you push in the clutch. you will get this sound with a free flowing exhaust and air filter along with taking out your silencer ring it also helps if you have a heavy right foot. DO NOT try to bark your turbo its not good for it. barking the turbo is when you are at wide open throttle and you suddenly let off. what is happening is your engine is sucking lots of air in at WOT then when you suddenly let off the air needs somewhere to go so it sends surges of air back threw your turbo making the "barking" sound
clutchs in a manual and torque converters and valve bodys in a auto. if your not doin major mods a tq converter and valve body will help out yer rig alot. faster shifts and more power to the ground. you can also get a looser converter for autos to help spool a big turbo and a tighter one for smaller turbo's and so on. if your goin for major horsepower like a drag racer for instance you go for the full billet auto expensive but nearly bullet proof
You maybe hearing the jake kick in between the upshifts on the bigrig. But a dodge doesn't have a jake and i've never heard of one being put on, there buit into the head. There are blow off vavles for guys with big turbos in a stick shift. When your building 60psi then shifting and letting off the throttle every shift it is hard on your turbo. Oil seals in the turbo don't last. Blow off valves sound really cool and you hear them every shift. Autos don't really need a blow off valve.
I saw a youtube video last night of a white dually 5spd going thru the gears and it was making the exact sound I'm talking about. I'll look at it again & post the search word & you guys can see what I'm talking about.
I know exactly what you are talking about. My 7.3 ford did it after I opened up the exhaust but it wasn't quite as loud as what I've heard Dodges do.
12valvesmoke, thanks but I'll stick with manual trannys, the wife drives an auto. I think am going with a 6 speed from quad4x4. I already have a straight pipe (no muffler), a large K&N filter, no silencer ring. The bigger turbo will have to wait til Christmas. I appreciate the info.
you take off the air intake tube going to the turbo and there is a little dark gray snap ring take that out with a couple screw drivers if you dont mind damaging the snap ring but if you think you wont like the turbo sound i would find a safer way of removing it and i never said it was an auto thing... but oaky doky
It might be different on the other trucks, but I didn't get much of anything removing my silencer ring on my 3rd gen. It was only after I got rid of the factory intake that the sound really came out.
