Installing SP66 this weekend, any advice?

I got my sledpuller 66 turbo yesterday and i am planning on installing that along with my stacks this weekend, is there any advice or tricks that i should know about for the install on either one? Has anyone had any problems that i might encounter installing the turbo? Thanks for you time and help

Make sure to pre-oil the turbo and to crank the engine to get oil to it before it actual fires up (you can do this by unplugging the VP44).

thanks i was reading through the instructions that they gave me and it said to fill it with oil and then after it is all connected let it run for at idle for 3-5 minutes. Should i turn the engine over with out it firing to get the oil circulated? How to do you unplug the vp44? Thanks

Just reach down to where the vp 44 is and pull down on the latch. The latch will release and move back/disengage.

The latch is black and has the "void" sticker on it. It is where the engine wire harness connects to the VP.

maybe spray the bolts/nuts that hold the turbo to the manifold with a penetrator a few times before the install to make sure they come off easy.

thanks for the info, that is a good idea, to lube up the existing nuts and bolts on the manifold to make sure they come apart easier

I had to get about a 1/2" longer intercooler boot when I did mine.

There won't be necessarily any problems installing this turbo, but in driving with it there's a different story. Expect lots of lag, and surging if you do any type of towing in the mountains. You'll have to drive with a heavy foot to get anything out of it. It was designed for sled pulling, afterall.

No but it is suggested. I have re-used gaskets without issue.

Mine isn't that laggy. I pull in the mountains all the time and with what surge is there, its easy to drive around.

check the turbo drain tube

The turbo oil drain tube likes to rub the wastegate acutator rod. Dimple the tube with a ball peen hammer. On my 97 I had to clock the compressor housing, just loosen the bolts on the back side until the housing rotates and then tighten them back up. The 01 I installed on only had to dimple the drain tube. They actually sell new turbo to exhaust manifold gaskets??? I have reused mine many times.

Thanks for all the replies, i have a question for sled, what are the mods that you are running, i am glad to hear you say that it is not that laggy. From guys that i have talked to and have told that i run a Holset Super 40 said if i can deal with the lag from that turbo, i will have no problem dealing with the lag of the sledpuller, thanks again
