Inexpensive Power Mods??

I'm the proud owner of a new 2002 Dodge Ram w/Cummings Diesel (Beauty) that is going to be used intermittently pulling a 8,000 lb SunnyBrook fifth wheel trailer. This is my first experience with a diesel power plant and, so far, WOW!!

There's just one problem with the rig. I constantly dream of power upgrades. Upon waking and getting that first cup of coffee it seems as though I can smell a faint hint of diesel fuel circling around the room. As I shower, through the stream of water I can hear a low distinctive rattle of a Cummings. As I shave the whirrrring of my electric razor becomes turbo like. I'm afraid the rest of the day is much the same. What the hell have I done? Does this ever go away? What am I destined to become?

Let me let you in on a secret ... I have somewhat of a colorful
imagination. But, in all actuality the above is not too far from the truth.

Get to the point already.

OK, I would like to tweak the HP and Torque about 20% to 25% if possible .... what are my best options for under $800 or $1,000?

I've looked over Gale Banks' systems but do not want to spend that kind of money and also I don't want to entertain any upgrades that could potentially have issues with warranty service.

Finally, my question - Can this be done with intake and exhaust upgrades that will not create any warranty service issues?

I'm thinking possibly of a K&N, Scotty II or other after market high-flow intake, and a complete Flow Master exhaust system. Is it worth it? There is sooo many opinions on this site, I just had to ask. Any recommendations are welcome as well.

Lastly, will the my upgrades put out this fire storm of "Gear Head" activity or just fuel it?

Richard Shelton

I would get a comp it will give you a little over 100hp and 275ft lbs for under $600. Can't beat that.

Unless he has an automatic transmission.
If so, might want to go the EZ route, or not hook up the pump wire until you upgrade the transmission to handle the torque.

phox

Re:Inexpensive Power Mods??

Welcome to the site, Richard! You will really enjoy your new Dodge/Cummins combination. First thing you should do is fill out your signature so we all can see how your rig is equipped. We will be better able to advise you on things that way. If you have an automatic transmission, you will want to think about tranny upgrades before you do any serious bombing (modifications to your truck). There are several companies that can help you: ATS, DTT, etc. These mods won't give you any additional horsepower, but will help you get the horses to the ground. As far as engine mods go, helping your beast breathe better is always a good idea, even though it will not add much in the way of horsepower/ torque. The Scotty II is highly recommended by some of the guys here, and you can't go wrong with a 4" exhaust system. The 24 valve Cummins engine is computer controlled, and therefore there are several boost/fueling boxes (computers) that can help you with horsepower/torque. I haven't bought one yet, but I am aiming toward the Power Edge Comp. If you hook up the pump wire, you become your own warranty station. If you don't hook up the pump wire, you will get some benefits from the Comp, and can remove the box without any telltale signs that would tip off the dealer if you need warranty work.

There are other more complex mods that you can get into, bigger injectors, enhanced fuel delivery, etc. but the mods listed above will be a good start. If you have any questions, use the search engine on this site. There is a wealth of information stored in the forums here. If you have any trouble finding something, just ask. You can e-mail me if you wish, but there are guys here that are much more experienced and knowledgeable than I, that will be more than happy to help.

Good luck with your new baby!

Re:Inexpensive Power Mods??

If you're looking at bang for the buck in increased performance, then a Comp is the best for for all engines, except the ETH (6 speed), which responds better to larger injectors. Exhaust and intake systems will yeld little, if any, increases in power, but will lower EGTs. Ironicallly, the ETH (HO) is more costly to increase power levels than the ETC.

Get guages before doing any power upgrades.
