Im guilty...

I fell in love with a 98.5 24 valve guys.I decided against a Brand New rig. its a 3500 quad cab auto 4x4. What should i be looking for as far as trouble areas, things that are frequently replaced etc?

Also, what are common upgrades for these? id like to throw 400 rwhp to the ground at some point. i know a tranny would be in order, im just not super knowledgable about the 24 valvers, im more of a mechanical guy but the second i drove it i loved it...Can ya help a brother out?

Thumbs up

As long as you've been around, you should already know about gauges, exhaust and injectors. Does that truck have any lift pump fuel pressure?

Talking

first off do the key on 3 times thing to check for codes, ive read the early 24 valves were more often to have vp failures, how many miles on her?is it a smaokin deal?the one you should be looking for is the 98.5 12 valve with the quad cab.that would be the cats meow.if its a killer deal go for it but if its only an average deal keep looking for a newer 24 valve or a low milage 12 valve,

I cant find any 12 valves around here or id buy them in a second. to find a cummins period is a rare thing. The truck has 104K on her. It already has gauges, pyro, tranny temp, boost, and oil psi and fuel psi under the dash. The previous owner installed a custom 4 inch dual exhaust system. im definantly going to do a bhaf. the lift pump was replaced at 100K.

p.s. i was in scotts neck of the woods today but was on business and could not stop

check for a big ol' 53 on the pass side front of the block. that is the biggest bummer in those years.

I heard the same thing. The 53 block is prone to cracking, correct?

This only works on the 00+ trucks, 98-99 need a reader.

I'd think the tranny would be the first thing to invest money into. BigBlue is just under 400 hp with a VB and TC, and I think he said the tranny is slipping at that level.

Hey rick, i send you a PM every once in a while. I sold her to a fella who lived in india, he took it back home with him LOL...i bought a POS powerstroke and now im going back to a cummins because i love and miss mine **** man, i missed talkin to ya hahaha. Trying out 24 valves now because i want to try something different and i dont want a brand new truck anymore... um the tranny is in great condition it was frequently flushed with the filter changed regularly. it shifts well and seems to be alright. i might throw a TC, VB, some new bands, and some solenoids and see how that does. ive gotta get ahold of Scott at Mass Diesel...

But this thing is smooth, comfortable, can cruise and scoot pretty good when i want it to and its dang near stock! cant wait to mod it, i need some help though. Because this will be my first 24 valve HAHAHA
