IGV's ?

In a past life I worked on jet turbine engines. The compressor as well as the high pressure turbine used IGV's or Inlet Guide Vanes to increase efficiency of the turbine. I wonder why someone hasn't come up with a set of stationary vanes placed in front of the turbo inlet. Sounds like a perfect spot in place of the silencer ring. It would just direct the air flow into the blades. Of course, it would probably sound like a J-79 at take off power. GOSH! Did I just give away a multi million dollar idea?

Re:IGV's ?

I myself am wondering if that is a secondary, or maybe primary purpose of the silencer ring.

Ya, sure, mine has gone missing as have most here.
Part of me doesn't think it is only to reduce noise though.

Saw a post somewhere, maybe here, maybe there,
someone had what looked like a small stainless steel bowl that fit into the turbo perfectly, and had removed the bottom of the bowl.
This resulted in a nice flowing surface right into the guts of the turbo.
Can't remember if he claimed any benefits of this or not though.

Re:IGV's ?

There are turbos already out there with igv or more appropriate VIGVs ( variable inlet guide vanes). In fact I believe the new ford 6.0 motors have IGVS on their turbos.
JJ

Re:IGV's ?

I realize this unit is a bit off topic of vaned inlets but it might stir up some interesting ideas. I have no personal experience with this thing but it sure does look cool. I like machined aluminum stuff.

Nixter

Re:IGV's ?

I had one built a couple of years ago that actually started the air rotating before it entered the turbine. I ran it up unti, the time that I got my HX-40. it actually made the turbo noise less not more.

phox_mulder, If you are still running a HX/HY-35 You would be more than welcome to barrow it and see what you think... It just sits in my office at School.(DATC)
