Htb2 64 is on

Ok i installed my new HTB2 64/14 today on my 98 12valve!
Mods: tweaked 215 pump: Rack travel mod, and 100 plate!

it says on the instructions the wastegate is set at 40 psi, but i only make 36 psi, (same as the ol HX35) and smokes lots, it still closes both lanes on the highway at full boost. will setting w/g higher help with power and smoke?

No injectors yet, 435's are lying on the shelf! and timing is still stock!

The turbo seems to be laggy on the Built BD tranny!
any input as why so much smoke, and no much increase in power?

Thanks, Silvano

What I noticed with the hybrid S300's is they smoke more down low than a little turbo but if you still have a stream of smoke coming out the tailpipe at WOT I think something is not quite right. That should be plenty of air for your current setup.

When you say closing both lanes of highway at full boost, is the truck still smoking after the boost is at 36 psi or is the smoke there from before/while the turbo reaches full boost?

hmmm even at 36 psi boost, it smoked, just as much as the hx35 at 35 psi boost, should i expect a difference enen though they make the same pressure??

i have been thinkin about a boost leak too, but not sure, i thought we put everything nicely together! we had no boots of, except the cold air turbo flange.

I dunno how much power your 12ver is making, but the smoke will clear at 450+ hp with a 64 on my 24ver, even at 35 lbs of boost.

How are egts?

Yes it is not all about pressure, but volume plays an important role as well.

At 36psi the 64/14 moves a lot more air than the stock HX35. With more volume of air to burn more fuel your exhaust should be cleaner.

12Valve:

You need to advance your timing up to 16 - 17 for starters. With my 62/12 HTB2, I can hold 30 psi on a long uphill, 70 mph, keep 900 EGTs and no smoke. That was with a #100 plate, laser cuts, pump tuned and 370's and timing at 17.5. Yes, I could peg the temp and pump alot of smoke too but it would clear quickly. I'm looking at a turbo upgrade at the end of the month on mine to accomadate the 435's. I'm running 21.5 timing now. I wouldn't think about putting the 435's in until try changing the timing.

Timing has alot to do with egts bump it up a good bit and you should be happy. It may not cure all of your probs but most of it.

retarded timing will also cause low boost pressure.

I run a 64/12 with the wastegate set from the factory I had a pretty good haze going down the track. I added a adjustable boost elbow and run around 44-46 psi on full fueling and smoke is down. I'm afraid to push the HG too much further. I suspect I could get 50 psi of boost and still have some haze.

Where does your exhaust exit? I see smoke where smoke is not supposed to be...

Watch your first video in slow motion.. It looks as though you have smoke coming from under the motor.

AHhhh, we just put on the turbo, with a home made downpipe, and 1 foot back, coming out under the cab! (for the first test drive!)
later comes a 4" complete exhaust!

but.... isnt there too much smoke coming from under the truck at 42 psi?

There are a lot of variables to concider. Boost leaks, elevation, air temp etc... I say this, that's a lot of smoke.
