Holley Blue Pusher Pump
Holley Blue Pusher Pump
I am curious to how reliable the Holley Blue fuel pump is when used as a pusher pump. I have one just sitting around, and really could use a pusher pump for my cummins. Who is running them and have they had any problems with them. Also, If the pump was to fail, would the cummins pump be able to feed the motor. My guess would be probobly not. So I had an idea of a way to possibly fix this. First, I dont need the pump very often, my fuel pressure if fine unless I have my FMS turned way up. So I was thinking about this. I would like to take the Holly Blue pump and put it is parallel with the regular fuel line, and have a ball valve in the regular line. So when you need the extra fuel, you can have the pump set up to run with the ignition only when you have a switch on. When running like this you can just close the ball valve on the other line and run with the holley blue. Then when you are back to normal driving, turn the pump switch off, and open the valve back up. If you bleed the system with ball valve open, you wont get any air in the system when switching lines, at least I dont think. Would this work? Or am I just too concerned with the holley blue pump failing?
Re:Holley Blue Pusher Pump
The system you are designing could work, but is kind of complicated. I think you may be a little too worried about failure of the Holley Blue. It is known that recently there have been a mess of problems with the Holley pumps, but if yours is an older pump you will probably be OK.
I run a Holley Blue myself, and it's been working OK for 6 months now. I bought new-old-stock off of Ebay so I was not worried about the recent Holley problems.
I installed mine with a backup also, but did it so it will require the turning of wrenches in a couple of places.

When you install the pump you might want to check the pressure and make "adjustments" to the spring while you are in there. My pump has less than stellar pressure, 11 at idle and 8 at WOT, but it's doing OK. As soon as I get a chance I'm gonna climb under there and stretch the spring to see if that will raise the pressure a little.

You can see what I did on my web site:
http://www.Stamey.nu/Truck/FuelPump.htm

Chris
Re:Holley Blue Pusher Pump
I'm running with just the Holley Blue in the factory position.
Simply because the last two Holley Blacks where defective.
I have -8 teflon braided line with no banjos from the filter housing outlet to the VP-44.
Theres about 20,000 miles on this combo and heres what I have for mods...
DD Stage 3's, B1 Kwik Spool and the TST Powermax 3 Comp.
At idle I see around 11-12 psi.
At cruise I see 10 psi...and here is what is great about the Holley blue so far...I cannot pull it below 7 psi at WOT on level 9 on a hill with the trailer on! It also recovers very fast back to 10 psi. The pressure is taken at the filter housing outlet...post filter. Some folks have been getting higher idle and cruise numbers, I can live with this since it keeps up to my demands under load.
I attached a pic of the connections to the VP-44. ;D
