Heat shield or not?

I just got my BHAF and cover installed and I noticed some folks use heat shields, some don't. What do some of you guys out there recommend? Just watch the EGTs and take it from there? I think mine may have been just a wee bit higher than the stock air filter but I haven't had a lot of time driving it since it was put on. I got the egts up to mid 900s by just doing normal accelleration, not going higher than 5th gear- around 50mph max. Doesn't stay up there tho.

I ran a large cone K&N for years without a heat shield without a problem.

But now I have BHAF, since it is so large and close to the turbo I made a shield. I have a link to plans for one if you need it. Easy to make, one bend a few holes to drill.

Here's the link for the shield template. Just print it out, tape the four sheets together and cut out the outline. I used a few pieces of tape to hold it to the sheetmetal and sprayed the outline with paint. Cut it out with sheetmetal sheers and bent it over the workbench. It fit great.

Theres 2 types of heat shields , one " on " the turbo , not good from what I gather , then making some kind of shield box around airfilter , good in warmer weather , you may want some heat in really cold weather .

I just looked at mine for the first time tonight and wasn't real happy with what I found. Do your filters just lay there, not attached to anything? The roads I drive are really washboardy and this just doesn't seem like avey stable installation. Shouldn't there be some brackets or something to stablize the filter??

With my heatsheild, it doesn't move an inch. As long as its not gonna pierce on a stud, I think it would be ok.

Take the rubber mushroom nut things out of the stock airbox,
then do this:
1/2 inch holes drilled for the mushroom nuts.
L bracket for a hose clamp (didn't have one big enough, so put two together)

Mushroom nut thingies holding the heat shield down.
(L brackets were riveted on backwards, they should be facing in, not out)

Final installation:

Or you could take the rubber nut thingies apart and attach them to the studs to give the BHAF something to rest on without tearing it up.
