Grille Lights

Saw this on a couple 3rd gens, but they used blue and red, so neither was street legal. I thought I'd try orange and see how it looked, (since I shouldn't get bothered for it...follows color code). It still needs a few tweaks, but I like it so far:

I update the pic after I fixed the top row of bulbs. Here's what I did:

I've got a row of four orange blinker bulbs along the underside of the top lip of the bumper, just far enough toward the radiator to shine upward but not be visible through the gap. I also ran a set just behind the grille along the upper part of the hood. If you duck low enough, you can see the bulbs, but just barely. The combo of the two throws quite a bit of light on the subject...now people can tell it's a ram in their rear view at night!

You know...

That's the kind of project I would like to do one of these Summer nights.

That's cool. Never seen it before.

I was just thinking how sweet this would look at the night pulls or drags...even though I do neither (yet). They'll work for around town for now. Just because its a workin truck doesn't mean it can't look good off the job!

And yeah, what did I start?

The wiring is just four bulbs in parallel along the bottom and four bulbs in parallel along the top, tied into the parking light harness...I may go back and hook them up via a relay to pull less draw off the parking light harness, but it seems fine for now.

And here's a few more pics...its plenty bright, even with the headlights on: (its actually a little more even in person, the camera's adjusting for the huge dark/light differences)

Since I've now discovered that it looks good from the outside, I'm going to run like this for a while and see if I get bothered by the law...then I'll probably go back and 'finalize' it a bit better, perhaps with some LED bars instead of bulbs.

As far as wiring, I just tapped into the parking light on each side, but you can choose how (parking lights, fog lights, headlights, or just a switch) but here's the pics:

Hood side:

Bumper side (shows three out of the four, there's another bulb out of the pic...just make sure they're evenly spaced):

I actually thought about the turn signal thing, but they're one element bulbs...
