GOT IT - - IT'S ON - - RAM AIR III

Got my new Ram Air III in and installed yesterday. Installation took the whole sum time of about 15 minutes - - very easy. Attached a pic below of the finished install. The filter element has to have about twice as much surface area than the factory unit. This was one of the first units they received and does not even have any decals or markings on it.

I have not had time today to do much testing on it, but it was obvious I have a solid 75 degree decrease in EGT's in normal cruise at 50 to 60 mph. I have not tested it under heavy pulling, hills or tests I ran before installation. I will post results when I can hook up to my 16000# fiver and give it a good work over.

My first impressions are very positive. My only concern was the collar holding the filter was too loose. A chat with Rod found they were concerned with it too and have all ready made some changes on that collar to snug up the fit.

I should be able to post some definitive tests within a week. Just wanted to let you know the first observation is a good one. Maybe it is just me, but the truck sure felt quicker at the higher RPM's.

Bob

We've got 5 R&D units on the street, and 2 have had loose end caps. The extended cab trucks appear to fit differently than reg. cab trucks (same issue as was found with the Scotty IIs). The full release versions that are now shipping have no end cap issues at all...

Rod

Rod,

The "older" trucks use the Scotty II.
Here's my '99 with my Scotty II.

Re:GOT IT - - IT'S ON - - RAM AIR III

Rob,

Regretfully, I have not had time to go play much. What little I was able to hit the road yesterday I felt the higher RPM response was quicker and stronger running up thru the gears. That very well could be quicker spool up. The test is running steady, then goose it - - haven't done that yet. Too much traffic around - - probably run over a Michigan license plate running 20 mph in the left lane looking at some insignificant thing like an alligator walking along side the road.

I do not feel the loose collar will be an issue for now. I am using as is and trying it. Just want to get some miles and testing on it with the fiver on board.

From a roll, plant your foot into the throttle and see if the boost comes on faster than it did before.

That high end response you're feeling is the IAT/AP sensor being fooled into believing that you're running at a lower altitude than you really are. Since you are already pretty much at sea level, I think with the factory box on the truck, the turbo was asking for more air than it could get, reducing air pressure in the system, and the IAT/AP sensor was defueling at wide open throttle. Since you are no longer starving for air, the ECM is fueling as it should have from factory and you've just gained a little top-end power.

I do feel the need to re-iterate for those who are reading, that we feel these slight power gains that we are getting from the airboxes will be completely gone when timing/fueling boxes are added to the system. The original set of fueling curves will be modified drastically be the timing/fueling boxes, and as such we don't have a sniff what the aftermarket will do to that IAT/AP sensor signal (hopefully, they'll ignore that critter).

Rod

He was quite surprised. He took off from a light squalling with the hammer down taking me by complete surprise. So, I thought, I just wonder what that thing has. I passed him in about 1/2 block - - he was screaming and rattling - - me, just "loafing along". Kinda fun. Gave him a smile and wave. And, I was definitely still being gentle to my truck - - nothing radical. His was about an '01.

TeenAgeBob
