gauge wire routing
gauge wire routing
I have been browsing this forum for a while and the search feature works great, so i have been busy soaking up all info about cummins, and now i have a question for yall. i just turned 16 and have always wanted a big turbo diesel, and my great parents found a dark blue 01 in really good condition, i took a look at and was happy to see it was a five speed. i had already learned a little bit about these cummins when i found this truck, so i new what i wanted, and it was that truck. On the night before my B.D i had to go to a swim meet, ( im on the swim team) we got back really late, and my parents were at a wedding, so i had to walk home, they told me they may have a surprise for me, so I figured this would be "The last walk" and it was a hell of a one too, it was 15 degrease out and i had no jacket. i know some of you guys see temps in -20, but in Texas this is dang cold enough for me. So back to my original question, i made some extra cash so I though it would be a good idea to add some gauges. I took a look at my stock pillar and found some wires leading to a grommet in the fire wall, there are two grommets when looking from under the hood, i think it is the smaller top one. It looks like it is really tight around those wires. How are you guys pulling boost lines, egt wires, and fuel pressure lines through there?
Yo Piston - welcome to the board.
You probably have a spare grommet if you have an auto. Simply cut a small slit in the grommet and push the gauge wires/plastic boost line/fuel pressure line through there. Crawl under the dash and finish pulling them through. Ty-wrap them to existing wire harnesses under the dash. You can run them up the A-pillar by using a non-conductive probe to tape the wires to and pull them up so you don't short anything out. Pick up you gauge power at the fuse block by using an add-a-fuse from Pep Boys. Add on to the fuse for the instrument lights and your gauges will dim with the instrument lights. Take ur time an keep all wiring away from e-brake moving parts and you should be o.k.
P.S. Add your truck statistic to you signature so people on here can better help you. Go to user cp and fill out the signature.

Re: gauge wire routing
First off, welcome to the board, be prepared to find out more than you ever knew about these trucks and engines.
That answers that.
Just cut a slit in one of the bigger grommets on the firewall, should be able to get everything through.
The rest is just as BBWD posted.
A lot have found easy key-on power by tapping the ciggarette lighter,
and dimmable lighting power by tapping the ashtray light.

I just finished my guage install last night. For the postive to light the guages I pulled the light switch out by prying loose the surrounding dash (their clips so yank on them firmly) then remove the 3 screws holding the switch in, in the center plug there will be a thick brownish tan colored wire, put a T splice on it and its done. If you are installing a pyro too, I suggest mounting the box unit inside under the dash and only running the + and - to the probe in the engine compartment. The power for this can be easily tapped into the bundle of wires running up the bottom side of the steering colum, tap into the large dark blue wire(it looks to be about 12 guage or so), the there are bolts all the way around the metal dash frame that you can put an eye on all of your grounds and stick it under one of them. The rest of the install is mainly routing wires.
I reccomend picking up the boost bolt from Genos which makes the boost probe a matter of replacing a bolt. Only trouble I ran into was getting one of the lower turbo to manifold bolts broken loose. Take out those 4 and the 2 on the bottom of the turbo for the oil return and the turbo will safely pull away enought to put rags in the manifold while drilling and tapping.
For the fuel get a tapped banjo from Genos and then buy an elbow and a needle valve. I used teflon line and all 1/8 NPT fittings on mine. Oh that will all hook into the bottom of the fuel filter housing.

I suggest running your gauge wires/tubing from the engine compartment and into the cab. Not from the cab to the engine compartment. And no, if you push fuel line down the a-pillar it's not going to pop out in the engine compartment.
Check my photo gallery for fuel pressure gauge setup pics; and I have the 4/1 banjo bolt setup from Geno's Garage 4 sale in my classifieds.
Welcome to the board....it's a wealth of knowledge.

No. Whatever wires or tubes you push down the pillar will come out below the dash. The grommet everyone refers to is in the fire wall by the pedals.
