fuel system upgrade

I am finally going to upgrade my fuel system to a Fass or airdog.

My intention is to eventually go with rv275 injectors. I have an intake, exhaust, upgraded clutch.

What would be the GPH I would need? I will be pulling the intank pump out and running a draw straw and increasing the fuel lines and losing the banjo bolts.

My goal is to reach for longevity and reliability more than anything.

Thanks!

I have 95gph w/DD1 injectors and edge box and have never had an issue. I pull through the stock fuel pickup. Best thing I ever did to my truck.

I have the Raptor FRRP replacement pump on mine. Which specs out at 100gph. With my rv injectors and a edge comp I had plenty of fuel to go around. I'm sure you know that Fass makes a replacement pump, however its only rated for 40 to 50gph.

I'm running the Raptor 100 with the setup in my sig. I have it set to 18-19 at idle, keeps 15psi under hard acceleration.

I would run a walbro 392 fuel pump that's been relocated by the fuel tank (by the driverside rear tire). Hopefully your truck has the stock fuel pick-up and hasn't had the intake fuel pump installed. You will have to install a 12V/40 amp relay (triggered off the factory lift pump wires) and run wires down to the walbro.

I run an cheapo $20 adjustable efi fuel regulator, that set at 28psi. Run 3/8in fuel lines to the factory fuel filter. I have about 150000miles on this set-up and has worked well. I have around $150 bucks into this set-up

Its easy to install an extra filtration by installing a filter head/filter, if you wish.

Mine does have the intank pump, I wanted to remove it and use a draw straw set up. Is this a big deal? I am planning on pulling the bed.

The Walbro and raptor sounds more popular....

If you can get ahold of a tranny jack, its a fairly easy job to drop the fuel tank. Took me about half hour to get the tank on the ground. Of course it helps if the tank is closer to empty and ya have someone to help ya out..

When I removed my intank pump I would have installed a draw straw but I had a factory fuel pickup/sending unit with out the intank pump attached to it laying in the garage..

Lovin, is your pump mounted on the engine block in the stock location?

The Walbro is only listed to last around 3000 hours, the raptor is 15,000-16,000 so I am going to go with it.

I watched a youtube video a guy did regarding the intank pump and it looks pretty easy. I am going to have to use the intank framework to keep my fuel level sender and return tube etc.

I've already got power to it from the factory "upgrade" and am going to mount the pump forward and below the fuel tank and run larger lines and lose the banjo's......

The draw straw mod has issues. No fuel pick-up below 1/4in tank and lack of fuel pressure under hard braking/hard acceleration. VP are fairly fussy about fuel pressure quality. The draw straw works ok on common rails, as the CP has to fill the rail and is self-priming. A VP isn't.

I would try to find a stock non intake fuel pump module or get a liberty fuel pick-up module. I think Glacier diesel have them listed on there site.

Not sure were you got the 15000-16000 hour for the fass/raptor/air dog pump motor. I only got a year or so out of mine.

The probably the best fuel lift pump fix is to install an aftermarket camshaft (one with the 12V fuel pump lobe) or install a 12V camshaft. Install the cummins VE 12V lift pump. Leave the rest of fuel system as the factory did.

SIXSLUG,
I have the Walbro 392 setup with a mechanical pressure regulator from GDP that he set at 16psi. Pump and pressure has been rock solid for just over 5 years now and quiet as a mouse. I also have an intake, exhaust and RV275s.

I am using the stock pickup point with a fuel strainer and ran 3/8" fuel line and AN fittings from the pickup to the stock fuel filter. From the FF to the VP44 I increased to 1/2" line.

Pressure when cold is over 16... when warm probably 15 and cruises around 14. I can rarely pull to 12 when towing.

And I can get a replacement 392 almost anywhere if I ever needed one on the road.

This is what I am thinking will be my set up. I watched a youtube video of what is involved with the pick up point with the dealer installed in tank pump module, which is what my truck has. The guy has a good set up for the pick up tube. I was just watching it to see what all is in there as I haven't done one before...

Thanks Mike, that is good info.

I got the hour/lifespan numbers off the websites for the respective pumps. I have also read many posts stating this isn't likely to be reached.

I don't want the pump on the engine/stock location after educating myself on the principles of hydraulics reagarding distance and pushing vs pulling.

I wish I could have swung the aftermarket pump when my LP died the first time, but wanted to take advantage of my warranty and the dealer only gave the intank a an option.

I know a few guys and may be able to get a stock non intank pickup device for my project.

Thanks!

I personally wouldnt run a raptor or airdog. They are having reliability issues lately. Imo fass or dtt assassin are the best out there for our trucks!
