I have a few 6.7l turbos laying around, my hx35 is leaking and i need to get a new turbo beforeit gets worse, and I want to put a VGT on it from the 6.7, expecially since I already have more than one, I need some information on the fleece controller for VGT, I am wondering how it works and how well it works, do you have to manually control it as you drive? or is it all automatic? I called fleece and they dont seem to expensive for the controller, also how does it sound? cant really tell from the youtube videos. Please any input greatly appreaciated.

Ok cool thanks, I think im gonna go this route, but I am planning on using the stock second gen manifold for it and have an adaptor made, and possible a wedge style adaptor cause ive heard with the stock manifold it wont clear the strut tower. I think i would want the exh brake so its would be 600 for the controller from fleece but its still cheaper than buying a new turbo and sounds like a great setup. Ive seen a lot of videos of people using awastegate actuator to operate but I wouldnt think that would be as efficient and seems like it would be a pain...

So what kind of power has been made on a HE351ve anyways? There was an article on an install in the Nov issue of Diesel Power, but they didn't put up dyno numbers.

What psi will it push? The said in the article it overspeeds at 40psi. If i spend $650 for the controller and $250 for the turbo, then some more to setup the downpipe, manifold adaptor, etc... it sounds like you could spend close to $1000 pretty easily. That is alot and gets you some pretty nice used turbo's.

And one last thing, do the larger VGT holsets use the same programming as the 351ve? Could I hook up the controller to a HE431/451/551ve and have it work? That would be pretty neat.

 

Do a little searching over on competitiondiesel.com Lots of guys running them over there. I've even got a thread going asking who's dynoed their vgt combos on 12v trucks Some guys also running the 451's and 551's, and even some hybrids. I adapted the turbo to my stock manifold and downpipe. I'm controling the collar with a 2$ spring and have about 350 into the entire project and, for a dd, I don't regret the choice.

 

Ran a HE551V for a while on my 98 12v...551/1083 on the dyno, got it spooling a little better after that, but the mechanical controls were a bit finicky.
I do know if it sticks wide open, it will spool at about 3900RPM, smack 540hp, and hold 500 plus up to about 4600RPM


I have a HE551VE and HE561VE sitting here now...and a 2010 6.7L...but it's staying stock!! I like the warranty!

Seems pretty cool to have that kind of spool and wide operating range. The S300 I have spools well, but is too hot for higher rpm.

 

I was trying to find a 551VE for a while for my 24v. I think a 71mm single that spools up like a small turbo would've been pretty fun. They were like hen's teeth though.

 

Oh it was fun...but remember it's still a BIG charger. 71/108 intake wheel, and I can't remember, but I'll say 80/86 on the exhaust. It doesn't spool amazingly fast, but for a charger of it's size, it is VERY good!!

Whats the cost of one of these controllers? I tried searching for the vendor and just got pages of his Youtube posts.

 

Last I saw was $650 with the e-brake control.

 

Looking at some threads on comp diesel the VGT controller will work on any holset VE series turbo... So how fast does a 551 spool compared to a 351? Looks like you can get a hair over 400hp on the 351 but have to upgrade to a 551 to get higher.

I'd really prefer to get a 551 and have more top end available but worry abuot spooling it... I just cant get a feel fore how effective that VGT is for a 71mm wheel.

Any input is appreciated.
